Comfortable and safe
I spent 2 nights at the Oscar Hotel (29-30 May, 2006). It is close to the centre of the city, and the staff at the front desk are really friendly and helpful.
One downside of the hotel is that some of the rooms do not have windows because the hotel is joined with another building. I paid USD$12 extra to upgrade to a room with a window.
Overall I was very happy with my stay there. The girls on the front desk were just fantastic. They spoke good English and always had a smile, and were very helpful. The room was clean, and the bed comfortable. The hotel is currently undergoing renovations, and the room I was in had a wooden floor. I have stayed in many hotels around the world and I have found that the carpet in many hotels can be really disgusting. Wooden floors are so much cleaner.
The breakfast is OK. Not fantastic, but adequate. However, bear in mind the price of the hotel. If you don't like the breakfast there, you can find better food at nearby restaurants for only a few dollars. The range of food at breakfast is a bit limited, and is of only pretty good quality. I have stayed at the nearby Caravelle Hotel, and the breakfast there was really good. However, the room rates are 5-10 times higher at the Caravelle.
I felt that my belongings were safe in my room during the day at the Oscar. The bathroom facilities were also good. Hot water and water pressure were good.
The business centre has one computer, and no speakers or microphone. It costs USD$3/hr. Go across the road to the internet cafe and pay about USD$1/hr for well setup PCs with headphones and microphones to use Skype/MSN/Yahoo etc.
Overall I would recommend the Oscar Hotel highly. For me, the food was the only reason that I was not 100% happy. But more important the room was clean, comfortable and safe, the staff competent and friendly.
