watch the door men, else it was ok

this was an ok experience, as you would expect for a hotel that is in a chain. one thing though, the door men appear to have a relationship with taxi drivers waiting outside, who do not post their fares, have manipulated their meters to show outrageous fares, and do not give official receipts. there were a number of us staying at this hotel in connection with a conference and this experience was pretty common, but less likely and less blatant when two travelers shared a taxi (in that case the meters were still wrong, but less wrong). note that if a shanghai taxi driver can not issue a machine-written receipt a traveler is not required to pay. several of us would go take a taxi to the airport and just hand the driver 200 RMB (still a bit more than what it should cost) and walk away even though the meter would show double. the cheating taxi drivers did not contest this. note that in order to be able to do this you should not place luggage in the trunk of the taxi but keep it with you.
