Wouldn't have stayed there if it was free

Let me premise by saying that I have stayed in a number of hotels, hostels and guesthouses in my lifetime. Never, however, have I opened a hotel door to find what was waiting for me in the Blue and White Hotel.
The furniture was beyond dated -- the orange shag carpet was worn and filthy, the blankets were old and covered with questionable stains and cigarette burns. I have seen nicer furniture in junk yards. And the mattress...the thick brown stains on the side were horrifying. There was food all over the floor including (but not limited to) dog food pellets and crackers behind the bed. On top of all of this, the room smelled worse than a bar on Saturday night.
Even if this room was $5 a day it wouldn't be worth the disgusting living conditions. But it wasn't $5 a day, or $10 for that matter. It was in excess of $35 a day for the most despicable room I have ever seen. Oh, and don't forget the $50 deposit required by the front desk. For what? To ensure we didn't rip up the carpets or steal the blankets? That would have been doing them a favor.
When we approached the front desk about a refund (after a grand total of 5 minutes) we were addressed with subdued interest. I'm guessing the state of the room was no secret. We did receive a full refund, however, and learned a valuable lesson about paying for rooms sight unseen.
Please, please stay away from the Blue and White Hotel. The Travel Lodge down the street charges the same weekly rate and is an exponentially nicer hotel.
