Located on La Concha Bay close to the main shopping district, Hotel Niza, an independent hotel, has been in business for over 90 years and remains in the hands of famous sculptor Eduardo Chillida's family. There's an excellent Italian restaurant in the basement (La Pasta Gansa) as well as the Cafe Biarritz with its attractive terrace offering views of the beach. The comfortable bedrooms are cheerfully decorated in bright colors and nearly half of them have sea views. Check website as prices vary according to seasons.
After doing a ton or research (and actually being from Spain, but living in US now) we found Hotel Niza and it read to be perfect. Upon check-in, we had some challenges. We had originally made reservations for a week, we stayed less than 12 hours.
Location: Positive: Location is perfect - smack in the middle of La Concha beach. Can't ask for better beach or boardwalk location, shopping on the street side. Negative: since it's on the main boulevard - there isn't a driveway, or curb, or anything to pull up and park your car. After circling twice (and I mean going about 2 km to the next available roundabout and back) I told my husband to get on the sidewalk, literally, jump the curb, and block the pedestrian sidewalk and I'd jump in to the front desk to ask where to park/unload car. The desk clerk said right there, car is perfect.
Hotel Parking: Positive: they have parking (parking reservation required) Negative: the parking is about 2 blocks away, and extremely narrow underground (even by Spain's standards of narrow parking). The hotel only has about 10 spaces for about 60 rooms available, so make reservations for parking.
Rooms: Positive: we had a top floor, balcony/beach view. Room was clean. Negative: No Air Conditioning. None of the beach front rooms have AC. Completely unbearable if humid and summer, because since the sun sets about 10 pm, it is hitting your room which is all windows from about 9 am - 10 pm. You can open the windows and they are the door type to get "out" to the balcony, however the top floor balcony doesn't have room dividers, so everyone on the top floor can walk along the length of the building, so sleeping with the window in a door position is not feasible, if you do not wish for anyone to walk or look inside your room. Room was very small - basically the width of the bed and a 1 foot night table on each side (you could not move the tables or bed a centimeter to either side), the bathroom has no vents, fan, its basically a closet with toilet, shower and sink (can't recall if there was a bidet). The only opening is the gap under the door. 2 people cannot be in the bathroom at the same time. Maybe 2 children
We checked in one night, and were out the next morning. There were no other rooms available (AC is available in other rooms) but other guests were also checking out, and I did catch complaints about how the AC worked in their room). Perhaps in the winter, this place is great, but if in the summer, and you can avoid all comfort of ac, and getting ready without being in unbearable heat - I can't recommend this place.
