The Hampton Inn was better, won't be back.
The hotel appears nice from the outside, minus the area it's in. The general area is not family friendly, particularly for young children. It is located on the beach which is nice, however right across the street is a large convention center which had over 3,000 attendees the night we were there. That meant 2,000 teenagers who were roaming the halls (since they weren't allowed to go into the other gender's rooms) until midnight.
The walls may as well be made out of paper. It is LOUD. Everything you would expect to be a typical convenience is a pain. At night, your car is a block away from the North tower, so plan on walking. Not to mention, it's costing you $10 per night to park in a fenced lot in an area you'd probably rather not leave the car overnight. Daytime it's fine, night is another story. Plan on emptying your vehicle of everything.
The valets could not be nicer and are the one redeeming attribute of this hotel. I decided to upgrade to valet parking after hiking back from the other pay lot. $18 is steep, plus tips to the valets, but not as expensive as a broken window or lost contents from the unsecure lot (it is fenced on 3 sides).
Check in was a pain, they suggested I go somewhere until my other party members arrived since the rooms were in their name. It took 30 minutes to get them to verify that I was the other occupant of the two room reservation.
The Room:
The room was not clean. Bathroom had not been cleaned, we called and they sent someone right away. The middle sink was clogged and would not drain. Told them the next morning, by that evening they had drained it but then you still could not use it because they had not cleared the clog. Lamp was broken, you literally had to plug it in if you wanted it on and unplug it if you wanted it off, there was no switch. No fridge, no microwave. Ice machine down the hall so plan on icing and re-icing.
Old tv, even the Hampton Inn we stayed at on the way to Florida had a flat panel, this was an old CRT like the one you keep in your basement and try not to watch. Everthing was rusting from being on the ocean, the grout had stains, the caulk in the bathroom needed to be redone.
Just not a pleasant room or experience.
Finally the bill was wrong, my upgrade to valet parking after 1 time in the other lot resulted in a double charge for parking that day. The ocean room that I had not requested resulted in a $10 upcharge that at check in I was told was complimentary.
They fixed the bill with no argument, but I was trying to get an early start and spending 20 minutes at the south end counter when I am at the North tower is an inconvenience.
No luggage carts unless you want the bellhop with it. I am glad people liked this hotel in 2005 and 2006, but today, in 2010, it's a shadow of what it could be. It is not nice, not quiet, not restful or enjoyable and honestly was the worst experience I have ever had at a Hilton.
You don't even get a continental breakfast, even for Hhonors rewards members. We saw a Hampton Inn a couple miles to the south and really wished we had made the reservations there, it had it's own parking lot and probably included breakfast. Same company, supposed to be an upgrade compared to the Hampton, but this just wasn't.
This hotel has missed the mark completely. Everything was an inconvenience. Just trying to get the elevator to recognize your room key so you can get back to your room. Several guests were having the same problem. The other party we were with, their room locked them out and the maid out completely. New keys and even then it was spotty. If this is the way Hilton operates, it won't be long before this area is like most of the hotels and restaurants we saw at Daytona beach were, closed or empty. If you're into tattoos, bikers, loud cars, and a town that looks like the inner city, then this is the place for you. If you're expecting a resort, or the gulf coast, go elsewhere.
