The Journey is the Reward
By ,
The hike to Phantom Ranch and our overnight stay will go down as one of our best experiences ever. The hike itself is breathtaking (pun intended) and the stay at Phantom Ranch is just the culmination of a great experience. Good food, good company and a quiet serene place to rest overnight. Early breakfast is best in warmer weather, or the hike up will become daunting. When we started out for the hike up to the rim, they told us, "Don't ever stop believing you can make it out". We thought that was an odd comment until we got about 3/4 of the way up and had to tackle the switchbacks... Make reservations well in advance. Don't expect them to be able to accommodate you overnight without one. We would repeat this experience again in a heartbeat.

Would love to go back
By ,
We all liked the remoteness and serenity of the place. There is nothing that we didn't like about the place. The food and the way it's served is superb. It's been 4 or 5 years since we took the mule ride into the canyon and it was one of the greatest experiences of our lives. Our only regret is that we only stayed one night at the ranch instead of two. Would go back in a heartbeat.

Incorrect photo alert!
By ,
Hi All, Just to let folks know, the photo on the Phantom Ranch page is of El Tovar, not the Ranch. El Tovar is a fabulous historic hotel at the TOP of the Grand Canyon on the South Rim. It is fantastic, but don't think you will see it at the bottom of the canyon! I am hoping to stay at Phantom Ranch in Fall of 08, but was at El Tovar in October of 06. It is a grand hotel with such a fantastic history, design and location within the park. Dinners in the dinning room are gracious and excellent. A lively bar on the back porch faces the rim so you can watch the sky change colors at night. It's a splurge for sure, but worth it at least once!

Have to go again
By ,
What an amazing place! I went in July on a cancellation so it was really hot, but the ice cold lemonaid and all the other food was great. Don't rush the trip back, just a steady pace. I will be 60 this year and this was the best trip that I have ever done. Tip: comfortable shoes, mole skin, and lots of water.

Wow!!! what a great hotel...
By ,
The location was perfect and the staff went out of their way to assist us with information on ski packages, tours and shopping. The service was great! The complimentary breakfast was a real treat and a money saver. We met other guests from all over the United States and enjoyed visiting with them.

Been there two times
By ,
I so enjoyed the trip across the Grand Canyon from the North Rim to the South Rim I've done it twice so far. The Last time was with my girl friends from school we were celebrating our 30 years of graduating from High School. We enjoyed the showers, the food and talking with all the visitors down in the Canyon. It was one of the greatest trips we've taken together. Would love to do it again.

Best place to stay!
By ,
I worked at the Grand Canyon for 2 years, and the highlight of my time at the canyon was when I hiked to Phantom! A group of us hiked down on Valentines day. Beautiful place, great staff, and of course, you cant beat the scenery! The fact that they have such wonderful food, running water, and provide you with linnens is just great. Beds are comfortable, the benches located around the creek are a nice touch. Dinner and breakfast are AMAZING! Dont be afraid to request more of something (we didnt realize this until our second night)! The cake is delicious, and hits the spot after such a great meal. The canteen has some games and cards for your use (other hikers have left them here for the enjoyment of others) and you can get a cold beer! This is the best place to stay if you want to hike, but still want BASIC creature comforts! Cant wait to do it again.

Just stayed at the Campground
By ,
We just stayed at the nearby campground at the bottom. I thought this was an excellent experience. I worked at the Grand Canyon one summer and the funniest question I got was "Can you DRIVE to Phantom Ranch". Phantom is at the bottom of the Canyon....you cannot drive to to the bottom of the Grand Canyon! If you do go visit though, hiking to the bottom is a MUST if you are in good enough shape. However if you are not in decent physical shape or have health problems don't do it or take a mule! I witnessed way too many helicopter rescues and heart attacks from overzealous hikers. However if you are in decent shape and are very careful, drink lots of water and give yourself plenty of time then definitely go for it!
