Beware of Time-Share Rip-offs
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/9/07
Beautiful property but they lie. When we checked in, they asked us if we were going to any other properties to have a time-share presentation. When we told them we were, they tried (very hard) to convince us to cancel our other presentation and let them present their time-share program. When we told them no, they gave up, or so we thought.
At 10:00 am the next morning we went down the hill to meet the people to take us to the Mayan Palace for our presentation. The gentleman waiting for us told us he worked for the Mayan Palace and that they had had some problems at the hotel. The restaurant was closed due to a storm and they were frantically trying to get it open. Plus, the traffic was very bad and it would take at least an hour to get there. What we could do, however, was to listen to the Playa Grande's presentation and we would get all the same benefits. We were confused and asked him again what company he worked for. He said he worked for the Mayan Palace, but that the Playa Grande was owned by the same company. I could go on longer about all the lies he told us, but the long and short of it is that he almost had us back to the Playa Grande before we figured out he was lying and went back down to the bottom of the hill where, sure enough, the real Mayan Palace representatives were waiting for us.
The next day I called the manager of the Playa Grande and complained about our treatment. He denied any knowledge of this practice and said he would get to the bottom of it. I never heard back from him, but heard from other couples around the pool that they had had similar experiences.
It is too bad, because it is a beautiful property and I might have been interested in a time-share if they had treated me better.
