Would Reccommend Without Hesitation
If you're traveling and expect a "Ritz Carlton" experience... get a room at the Ritz. However, if you're looking for an affordable place to stay while away from home, I've found Best Western to be a great choice. Newark Airport West was no exception.
Scrolling below this review, you'll see some negative comments, and I think it best to address those, as I can say that almost all of the negatives expressed did not apply to me.
My stay was in one of the rooms with two queen-sized bed. The hallway did have a slight antiseptic smell to it... but this is something you want, as it indicates recent and appropriate cleaning. It was not so heavy as to be oppressive or dangerous. It's the same smell you get if you clean your bathroom properly.
The room itself was very clean, new sheets, new towels, everything fresh and just as I expected it. While I was there, the staff respected my privacy, and when I left the 'do not disturb' sign up, nothing was moved or changed when I came home (which is something I have not experienced at other hotels -- nothing quite like coming back to find your windows open displaying your laptop setup). I appreciated the fact that they only entered the room when I specifically indicated a need for housekeeping.
The shuttle worked like clockwork. There were four free shuttle rides to Penn Station Newark in the morning, and four back, but you could also set up a ride to take you there or pick you up on the half hour any time between those times. There were during my visit three active shuttles that I saw. The one time I had an issue with a shuttle pickup (due not to their fault, but the fault of an inconsiderate guest who had NOT called in beforehand who took my ride and left me stranded), they sent a driver outside the standard schedule to get me -- and did not charge me a cent.
Complaints about the staff seem horridly unfounded. Based on personal observation, I would hazard to guess that the people who had unpleasant interactions with staff had such as a direct result of their treatment of said staff. By the end of my staff, most of the day staff knew me by name, were aware of what I had been up to, and were swapping stories with me. Many travelers seem to forget that the golden rule to get good service is simple: Treat the help like human beings, not like servants, and they'll do well by you.
The AM breakfast, by the way, is a buffet-style continental breakfast, with eggs, bacon and sausage, potatoes, waffles, cereal, yogurt, coffee, milk, juices, bagels, toast, etc. This is not the typical poor excuse for a breakfast you typically find (the sort that things a few day old pastries will get you by)... this is a full meal. Definite bonus for that, since it comes with the stay.
Now, there were three negatives to all of this experience: 1) The television had basic satellite broadcasting, but did not come with a channel guide (a very minor thing), 2) The locale is a bit out of the way, and very few delivery services will come out to you (ask at the desk for their numbers), so either bring in or buy your meals because, 3) the restaurant, while serving decent food, has somewhat dismal hours and is definitely overpriced for the quality of the food, and the cost for spirits was embarrassing. That said, the staff was pleasant in the bar/restaurant, and that almost made up for it.
Overall, I truly appreciated my experience there, and want to give my encouragement to those who are looking for an economical stay close to NYC proper.
