Don't Stay Here

The people the work the front desk are rude, the internet connectivitiy says "good" or "very good" and its is extremely slow. If you are thinking of staying here while on business, don't, it's much more of a hassle. The rooms are OK at best. The best thing about the hotel is the breakfast that is served, it's fresh and tasty.... but other than that, beware!!

Good value; area is not that bad

I've stayed here twice in the past six months. Rooms have two queen beds, which is increasingly rare these days. Mattresses were better than average. Room was clean, comfortable and quiet. Staff was very friendly, offering us some breakfast pastries when we arrived at 10 p.m. Complimentary breakfast includes omlettes (pre-packaged, but with real eggs, I think), fruit, cereal--better than average. Coffee is fair, but in the Bay area great coffee is easy to find elsewhere. The neighborhood is not so bad--I'd walk around during the day but probably not at night. And the hotel has good security--they lock the front door at night and keep a desk clerk on duty. Free parking right near the front door. Short drive to downtown, UC campus, freeway, Bay bridge. Gas stations and grocery store nearby.

GO ANYWHERE ELSE!

This HIExpress is in one of the worst areas of Berkeley. There are homeless people sleeping within feet of the front door and I recently saw the arrest of a man charged with being a "peeping Tom and burglar" in the area! All areas of the hotel smell badly of smoke since they have designated the 2nd floor (of 3) as the smoking floor. They must not monitor ANY of the floors, because all floors and rooms smell of smoke. The first floor rooms have bars on the windows...duh!! Why would their parent company accept this?

You get your money's worth...

...but unless you have a car, expect a bit of misery. Downtown Berkeley BART station is about a 30min walk. There are NO diners within 10 blocks. Breakfast was sub par (only ate breakfast there my first 2 of 12 days), but over on 4th street are a few diners with EXCELLENT breakfast ($15+ though)...worth the walk. I'll stay at the Shattuck, right in the middle of downtown Berkeley and across the street from BART. If I stayed there, I would have had a lot more fun (trips to SanFran, and a block or two from a LARGE selection of diners, movie theaters, etc.). All in all, not many complaints. If you have a car, this is a GOOD place to stay.

Nice Property in OK neighborhood

This was a typical (for me) Holiday Inn Express. It was convenient but not so close to heavy traffic that there was a lot of noise. Lots of free parking, well lit lot. Room was large and comfortable, and very clean. The bathroom fan didn't work. The neighborhood seemed a little dicey- my wife who is familiar with Berkeley seemed a bit surprised when I told her the address, but there were no problems.

Great Place!

The only thing that I didn't like about the hotel was the location. During the afternoon, it was awful trying to get out of the parking lot! University Ave. was jam packed with vehicles. When the light at San Pablo Ave was red, the traffic was backed up. Otherwise, our stay was excellent.

Not the best Inn Express I have stayed at.

The breakfast was minimal and the bathrooms were not as clean as I would have liked. The shampoos had been recycled because the safety seals were gone.

University Avenue's Affordable Stay

You can always say at least one thing for Holiday Inn, and that is that the price is reasonable and you know what you are going to get. Such is the case with the Holiday Inn Express located on University Ave. in Berkeley, CA. Flanked by Everett & Jones famous BBQ spot, and Halmar's Clothing and Work Apparrel, this Holiday Inn is a very convenient and easily accesible establishment. All the extras are there; clean rooms with a small microwave, mini-fridge, and sink. And the ever present complimentart "Continental Breakfast" will keep the coffee and pastry starved weary business traveler occupied for a while. This Holiday Inn provides an affordable and no-frills package. Conference rooms are available as well as a small gym room on the second floor. What more can you want for a few days stay at a hotel in the city of Berkeley? It's clean, safe, and close to all things "Berkeley".
