Dave's Tours Were The Best Part of My Stay
By Kevin R, 9/15/10
Good hostel. Cheap. Pretty clean. Without a doubt, Dave's Tours were the highlight of my stay. I took his Dave's Central Park Tour and then went back for his Dave's Downtown Tour. The $10 (each) was a bargain. I don't know New York City all that well but I know more now than I ever did before. An experienced guide like Dave makes all the difference in the world in a tough place like New York City. Be sure to get a locker - no matter what. And be sure to take one of Dave's Tours - no matter what.

Great place in all aspects
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 1/17/10
This was a fantastic hostel!! I've found that HI hostels are very reliable. This hostel is a block from the subway that takes you to the city centre so does not feel very far away. There is a HUGE, clean kitchen with so many facilities including a waffle maker. The bathrooms and bedrooms were clean. There were heaps of fun activities and tours organised by the hostel and the staff were very helpful and friendly.

Would go back in a heartbeat
By meghalemily, 3/2/09
This was my first experience staying in a hostel, and I was a little nervous. The staff was great, check in was a breeze and almost all were very pleasant. There were 6 beds total in my room each one with an individual locker (locks not provided). The bathroom was right down the hall with four shower stalls and five toilet stalls and four sinks. If you were up early enough the wait wasn't so long. The location was great, it's about three blocks from Central Park and the A and C train and another block in the opposite direction to the 1. I stayed for three nights and it was as comfortable as to be expected. There was an air conditioner in our room (a little noisy). My room was on Amsterdam Ave so there was traffic but what can you expect being in NYC! This was the best value in all of New York, if you're just looking for a cheap and pretty comfortable place to rest your head, look no furthur!!

Extraordinary!!!
By Oscar, 11/19/06
I went in August and istead of paying $100 USD a night in a hotel, I paid $150 USD for 6 nights, and its was terrific...The service is great, the people who work there are friendly and nice to you, lockers, there is internet access, television, videos games, kitchen, room service, there is also a cafe, etc...you'll meet people from all over the world...they also give you tours for a very small fee...i strongly reccomend to take GERRY'S TOUR...he gives it every Saturday...he takes you everywhere in new york and explains you about every landmark there is...he is an excellent person...you'll love it...so, if u want to stay in Manhattan for a cheap price and in an excellent accomodation, stay here...

NOT RETURNING-they had a "problem" with my room
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/1/06
While the other reviews were dated in 2004, there is alot of differences in 2 years. After traveling for more than 18 hours I arrived to find out that they had a "problem" with my room and that I can find beds at central park hostel. Mind you, I walked from the subway past that hostel, and made it to YHA to find out that I need to go back to where I just got off. They did not even make me a reservation there which is common courtesy when a hostel/hotel cannot provide for their service. I was so upset and wanted to speak to the manager but the guy i spoke to did not offer anything except that I can speak to a Mr. Tim Westwig or even stop by the next day which when I did he was not there. This was the worst YHA experience. I am a member and have always stayed with them. But after all the hostelling Ive done over the last year, nothing like this ever happened.

Great hostel for good price
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 4/18/05
I really liked it, because the staff was really nice and helpfull when i was there. The hostel also organise a lot of tours which are really great. Clean bedsheets are profited. And because of the size of the hostel, you meet great people from all over the world. Only downside really, is that the toilets and showers are in the hallway. So if you need to use the toilet in the middle of the night, it can be quite a walk. And if you have a room on the streetside, it can be quite noisy with the traffic.

No Complaints
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/12/04
I stayed there for 3 nights in Septmeber of 2004 and I really enjoyed it. It was reasonably clean, very safe and I met tons of cool people. It's very close to a subway station and the neighborhood has lots of character. I would definitely stay there again.
