Truckee Donner Lodge, Truckee

We called and made reservations for two rooms a month before our stay, and asked for second floor rooms facing the woods. When we arrived only one room was reserved and we were told there were no rooms left on the second floor. They finally gave us one room on the first floor that was suppose to be the last room in the hotel that was available. We took it while our friend argued with the rude manager about getting a room. When we went to the room the door wouldn't lock without turning the thumb latch on the inside of the room that meant when we left the room we had to leave the door unlocked we told the maintenance super about the lock and he said he would get someone to fix it, but no one showed up. In the mean time our friend finally did get a room and checked in yes, on the second floor facing the woods. We checked in about 3:30 not long after they allowed check-ins so I don't know how all of the rooms could already have been allocated and checked into so that they didn't have any rooms left. Of course all of this was on top of being talked to at the front desk like it was the biggest problem in the world to have to check us in it was like we were putting them out for wanting to stay there. The check in manager was very rude and degrading to all three of us to the point of being belligerent. This same thing also happened to us last year. We will not be back.

The Truckee Donner Lodge hotel is a great find since it's easy to access (just off I-80), close to ammenities, affordable and very clean. The staff was courteous and the room just as advertised. It seems like a new hotel since it was so clean. The bed had plenty of soft and hard pillows to please my entire family. The continental breakfast had all that we needed and was very clean and organized.

I am unaffiliated with this place and have no interest in it, but I did read your review with some interest. It does sound somewhat far-fetched that they would say you smoked in your room, but I don't doubt for a moment what you have reported. My only thought is that sometimes smokers don't realize how much they can carry the odor of cigarettes on their bodies, in their hair, and in their clothes. I have often experienced situations where I walk into a room and it reeks of cigarettes, yet no one has smoke IN the room; yet, they have smoked elsewhere and then have come into the room. I can well imagine that, if you carried the odor of cigarettes into the room, the bed linens would pick that up. The maids may have assumed from that that you had been smoking in bed, which would then trigger the deep cleaning, and the corresponding financial charge. I'm not saying that it is right or wrong what they did; rather, I am merely offering you another possible explanation of their actions.

This hotel is located right where you want to be! 20 minute MAX drive to Sugar Bowl, Squaw and Alpine. Right off freeway and newly remodeled... very clean. Very good value for the money.

I checked into the hotel at little after midnight the front desk clerk was in the middle of switching shifts. We got a double bed nonsmoking room. Now I smoke but my boss who I was with would not get a smoking room. Said we would only be there 7 hours I could smoke outside. No problem at 1am I go outside to call my wife and have a cig before I went to sleep for the night. Then at 6am we got up my boss got ready while he was finishing up I went outside to have a smoke in the back area and there was a female employee there smoking also. Second cig I had on this property in the 7 hours total I was there. Well when we checked out in the morning my boss paid cash for the room. Two days later I see a charge from the hotel for $100.00 which was cheaper than the room and I called the hotel to let them know we had paid cash and they tell me its a smoking charge for smoking in the room. WHAT never once did i smoke in the room. So I called the hotel and talked to the manager and she tells me that the head custodian said the room reeked of smoke and they had to deep clean the room. Because someone had been in the room smoking all night. She told me that if I do a charge back with the bank I will never be able to stay there again. Fine by me I do not want to stay at a place that scams people out of money. Did the hotel even get the money or are the manager and the head custodian splitting the cash that they they get from unsuspecting guests that stay at the lodge. I really cant believe that they said i smoked in the room all night. Did not happen ever not even a drag of a cig in that room or inside period.

There was a big wet spot on my bed that the front desk refused to deal with. After 5 mins of complaining about it they offered to change my room. Well no thanks. First when I called them to complain they should of came up to my room and checked it out or said we are sorry and please let us change your room while they dealt with the problem. I had only been in the room for 10 mins. I have stayed at this property before and happened to like it very much. I will never stay at this property again. I would rather stay 30 mins out of my way. Then to be subjected to the horrible customer service I received there.

It was a very clean place and comforting, somewhat expensive though. Expected since it is out in the middle of nowhere. Unfortunately they have a prob with charging nonsmokers an extra $100 for a smoking fee for the only reason I can see is that I am not from around there. Other then that it was a comfy sleep.

Usually stay in Tahoe City but thought I would give this hotel a try since it was newer than most properties by the lake. Room was pretty nice, comfortable enough, but average; not much hint of the mountains that surround the property in the decor of the room. Once you close the drapes you could be in Fresno for all you could tell. Location was convenient to the freeway if that's what you need. The free breakfast was typical continental faire but was served in a portion of the lobby, not in a separate area. Not real comfortable. Glad I tried it, but once was enough.

i thought this hotel was very good. it was easy to get drunk because there was a dinner place and gas station right there and it had a nice hot tub. Good times. and the shuttle could drive us to sugarbowl. good times indeed

The hotel would not honor its priority club free nights. They agreed to over the phone then even after I called Holiday Inn customer service they still would not honor a reservation using the priority points. Then they argrued in front of the breakfast crowd about it with me, told me it would be honored and when I got home they billed me anyway. The owner was whom I spoke with.
