Arrived at the hotel at 10:00 p.m. and first impression was less than favorable. *80+ degrees (F) in the room with no air conditioning along with the everpresent mosquito nets. Ended up spending 6 nights at the hotel and would return. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The food was good and the bar had plenty of cold beer.
Immediatly in front of the hotel is an incredible view of the snowcapped Mt. Kilimanjaro. Although close to town we were repeatedly advised by staff to take a taxi ($2-3). Did not find anything in downtown Moshi that would cause me to return. We used hotel employees for the Kili climb and safari. Was extremely pleased and would use them again. After finding out how much people paid third parties for their Kili climb I can't understand why people do not spend half the price to the hotel for the SAME service. Remember where you are and control your expectations. Already planning a return trip in '09.
We booked the hotel through a company who was taking us up the mountain and i couldn't have been more impressed. Keep in mind that Tanzania is a developing country, and that things we see as ordinary and common might not be available in Africa. Other than the moderate difficulty with making calls back to Canada, the hotel ws great, you get to wake up with views of the mountain, and sit around the pool and drink 50c beers all day. Plus its in a safe place and the staff and food were great.
I stayed at the Keys (annex) which is a bit away (I learned the hard way) from the Keys Hotel.
The annex is not the Keys. Apparently it is quieter (fenced in and secure and not as open to the general public as its parents).
Rooms are modest - with fan - mosquito netting and located in a # of apartment-like buildings.
There is a small pool and tv room (which I never saw used) and the place is scrubbed clean and reasonably well maintained. My room, however, had a crack between the window and the wall and a flood occurred whenever it rained! The shower had the same effect.
There was lots of hot water - cold and reasonably priced beer and a decent breakfast buffet (weak coffee however) and very tasty dinners (try the banana soup!) A great setting to watch Kilimanjaro and a nice rural street to take a country walk.
Service is sluggish but expect that in this part of the world. I always felt safe and secure and absent the late night arrivals of trekkers it was a quiet place.
I booked a Kilimanjaro climb at Keys a few years back. The service and value were absolutely outstanding. The staff went out of their way to make you feel welcome and their Kilimanjaro trek was well run and serviced, with all the right equipment and people, for a very reasonable fee. Don't expect 5-star accommodations (remember where you are), but expect good service, knowledgeable and helpful staff, all the basic comforts (including air conditioning TV and private bath) and a safe facility.
