worst exprience ever
By ,
me and a close friend stayed at the hotel recently over the weekend of June 23,2012. After a long a trip from central california up to the bay area, I went up to the front desk and wanted into to check into my room. As I arrived to the front desk, a hotel associated asked me some questions. She asked me for my credit card on file. I currently have a mastercard debit card that used to book the room. She then, swiped the card, and asked me, "how much do you have on here?" I told her, less than 50 dollars. I wasn't sure why she was asking me this. So now, all of the sudden she tells me that the hotel charges 200 dollars a NIGHT for any incidental fees. (I booked the room for two nights) I was completely blow away with that statement. I had already booked the room WELL IN ADVANCE (Back in MARCH in be precise) and i didn't have any spending extra spending money on my card. I told the hotel associate that " I was completely unaware of that, I thought that booking in advance was enough" She then NEGOTIATE some sort of "plea bargain". She stated that because I had booked the room in advance, she would only charge me 200 dollars and not 400 dollars for the incidental fees. Told her " Let me make some phone calls, and i'll come back up to the front desk." The hotel associate insisted that one of the other associates hold my bags for me. So I gave her my bags. After making some phone calls, I went back up to the front desk, and the associate that previously helped went on "break". I was persistent that I needed to speak with her again. One of the lobby attendants went outside to locate her. He came back and told me " the next associate will be happy to help you. " So I went up to the desk again, and explained my situation. as I was explaining this; the new associate looked at me will a puzzled look. She then stated " the incidental fee, is a one time set fee of 200 dollars. you don't pay that fee per night, that you stay here" so then she swiped my card, and she gave me my room key. I was so happy that I had finally got my room key, for a room that I had paid for well in ADVANCE. My friend was even calling around for other hotels just to see if anything was available; and being that it was PRIDE weekend, no other room were available. You may think this is the end of my story but it's not. I was so tired and exhausted for STRESSING about my getting room, that I had forgotten to retrieve my bags. So I went back to the front and asked for my bags. *SIGH* A lobby attendance approached me, and I told him " oh I need to get my bags" He then asked " do you have a baggage claim ticket." I told him "no, the hotel front desk insisted apon taking our bags. when i went to make that phone call that is when they took them." "oh, so you need to speak to a manager" He stated. After a few minutes he walked out with my bags. FINALLY. and then he asked "would you like me to take them to your room?" I told him "sure" I was fed up with the hotel and staff by now. So he brought the bags up to my room, and that was it. Due to the these experiences I don't suggest you stay this hotel. Along with the following reasons. 1. NO FREE WIFI IN ROOMS. only in the "living room or club area" of hotel 2. INCIDENTAL FEE OF 200 DOLLARS. This policy was not stated whatsoever on the hotel's website. If it was there, I wouldn't have stayed here. 3. LOCATION. It is nowhere near the ballpark. The reason i stayed at this hotel is because I wanted a close hotel near the ballpark for VANS WARPED TOUR 2012. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!!

Bedbugs
By ,
Found what looked like bedbugs and notified hotel management, who called Orkin. Inspection confirmed bedbugs. Hotel staff was helpful in moving me to a new room, comping the night of stay, and treating my luggage. However, they are refusing to offer further assistance if my home becomes infested.

Didn't even book...
By ,
Called to make some inquiries (ie car rental options, pet free rooms) and spoke with the Whatever/Whenever concierge (Florina) however I apparently taxed her patience after asking the first question and she hung up on me. Prior to that it was clear that she could not have been bothered to assist me. I did phone back and spoke with a Manager who said that he would speak to her although he did not take me contact information to follow up. Since I was informed by the manager that there is often only one concierge on site I was reluctant to reserve in the off chance that I would need assistance. The manager did provide answers to my questions but at no time did he offer to make my reservation so I let it go and booked somewhere else. It was my impression that the Whatever/Whenever is on their terms and not much more than a catchy marketing ploy that they use with the hope that their guests need Nothing/Nowhere. I hope that if you do stay, it is a lovely experience.

Will not go back to a W Hotel
By ,
The staff was rude, you could never find a doorman. They had a coporate event downstairs that went until late in the night and we could not get any sleep. The food was extremelly overpriced, and the lack of available staff was overwhelming. For the money the Palace Hotel, Fairmount, FourSeasons or the Hilton is a better hotel for the money.

Great place
By ,
The experience is different for any other hotel, I feel it was made to indulge you with all your senses , great music , beautiful view from the room, which was nicely decorated. It's a hotel for young spirited, not conventional people. It also has a great sense of privacy too. You will not feel bored if you are on your own. I think it's worth the money and time and definitely would go back: If you have the money Indulge yourself

Bad Internet, Lighting, Telephone
Avoid Starwood hotels, especially the W After being driven out of the $600 a night Starwood St. Regis in San Francisco because the heat wouldn’t work in either of the rooms they gave me, I registered in the Starwood $400 a night San Francisco W, at 181 3rd St, down the street where the heat did work. The W has all kinds of cutsie nonsense that gets in the way of comprehension. The operator answers with “what is your wish.” My wish of course is that she would answer with “operator.” The Internet service costs $15 a day but it stinks. Much better speed is available for free at any $150 a night motel. It would not run consistently faster than 200 kilobits per second which 20 or 30 times slower than a typical home DSL line. My slingbox would not work and it took forever to download files. W Internet is a small step above using a phone modem. Apparently the W is on an insane drive to save electricity. The room lighting is terrible. I happened to have a light meter with me so I took some measurements. At the work desk the illumination was 22 lux. There is no lamp or light anyplace near the desk. 22 lux is considered to be a light level suitable for inactive areas of warehouses. Offices work spaces are supposed to have 500 lux. If you want to read in bed at the W the light level is about 90 lux, a low but not impossible level for reading. The window benches have their own light which is so dim as to provide only 15 lux. The only place in the room with decent illumination was near the bathroom mirror where it reached 400 lux. The telephone in my W room started beeping at 3 AM for no apparent reason that I could discern even after several minutes of deciphering the instructions on the telephone printed in tiny, low-contrast type. Yes, I had my reading glasses on. It wouldn’t stop beeping even when I unplugged the connecting wires. I called the “what is your wish” lady to ask what do to. She didn’t know but offered to send someone to the room. Apparently calling the operator stopped the beeping. My next step would have been to put the telephone in the hall. The room was nicely furnished, even beautiful. But if they can’t get lighting, Internet and telephone right why would you want to stay in this expensive hotel?

The lobby was nice
I did not stay in this hotel, only went there to possibly meet up with a video game developer for a press thing but it did not pan out. Nonetheless, the lobby of this hotel was very nice.
