Smart hotel with a smart alek clientele
The rooms and decor are typical W-fare; by now copied ad nauseam in every city, in every wannabe "boutique" hotel. The reason for W's ubiquitous design influence is because the formula works spectacularly well in drawing in the young and trendy (the hotel's target clientele). But like most things trendy, which strikes a somewhat haughty, even sullen, pose to ward off the not-so-cool, this hotel also suffers from excessive poserdom (the W in Union Sq, NY is the worst offender).
Overall, the service is perfunctory. There is nothing personal in the care the staff offers--both at the front desk and in the entertainment centers (bars/restaurants)--that would distinguish the hotel as unique.
Intead there is a hype-inducing euphoria that permeates the lobby, where hipsters strike a tired pose, but underneath the dark shades, they hungrily eye the scene for where the next "it" party might sprout... Tiring.
The real draw are the room's bathrooms--not because they're extraordinarily large--but because they're efficient and modern. Plus the hotel is a hop-skip away from MOMA SF.
