Gloria Grand Hotel Nanchang, Nanchang

We stayed in the Gloria for a week (June 19 - 25th 2005) as part of our adoption journey. The hotel has a really good location for our purposes and many attractions and shops were in walking distance. The beds are like rocks - super firm. I have to admit for the first day or so it was hard to sleep - but that could have been jet lag too. We did get used to it and were able to walk around well for the time we were there. I marked down on cleanliness due to having a toddler, we walked down the halls a lot - mostly in bare feet or with socks. At least the 12th floor hallway left our feet and socks very dark. It appeared clean and the rooms were clean, but not to our families standards. The food was pretty good, but the nearby eating places had better value for us and significantly lower cost. The food service at the hotel was so-so. I think that as more westerners come to this area it may pick up. It was hard to gain a servers attention for coffee or other items until they were ready to serve. They had a curious clean up process for the adoptive families for AM breakfast buffet - the scraped the linen off of crums and then reset the table (sometimes) with new flatware. Coffee spills and other stains ready for the next customer. The staff really had no feel for what we perceive as customer service. We saw the same partial service for money exchange and the internal shops. Not evil/bad - just not insych with needs. The swiming area was nice and had an excellent view of the river (GAN is nearby) and night views are spectacular. The staff of the men's changing area and the hair salon provided excellent service and were well worth tipping. We did use hotel PCs for internet and it was pretty fast connections and a reasonable cost.
