good value for money

Room is a bit small but clean and pleasant,very well maintained.Breakfast is more than adequate.Service is prompt and staff friendly.Taxis cost only about 1 to 2 $US to go Dong Khoi street. Downtown hotels ,on the other hand ,are much more expensive.

Empress Hotel

Have stayed here several times. Good value, especially if staying for a week or longer. A bit far from Dong Khoi street and central HCMC, but taxis are cheap. Skip the hotel breakfast (mediocre) and find a local Pho restaurant instead. (If truly adventureous, turn left up the alley next to the hotel and walk to the first intersection - there is a "home style" [mornings only] noodle and soup restaurant in the house on the NW corner. Very cheap!) For evening fare, I recommend Song Ca (Two Fishes) restaurant about a block and a half away. Ask for directions at the hotel desk.
