Broken down expensive hotel that ruins vacations
By Peter, 10/29/09
My wife and I tried to spend our vacation at Portofino 10/25 to 10/31, but were very disappointed. We are both disabled and wanted to spend time in the pool. If the pool was going to be broken you should of told us this and gave us another room closer to a pool. The ice machine opposite our room was broken and it was broken the last time we stayed there. We are both disabled and had to walk tens of rooms away to get ice. If the ice machine was going to be broken you should of told us this and gave us another room closer to a working ice machine. The TV in our room was broken. If the TV was going to be broken you should of told us this and gave us another room with a working TV. The shower in our room was broken. If the shower was going to be broken you should of told us this and gave us another room with a working shower. You ruined our vacation, had us pay full price for everything, and we are very upset with LOEWS. You probably won't respond to this letter, so I am seeking other means of restitution.

Will never go back to this Loews hotel.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/25/09
The hotel is beautiful. However, Front desk attendants were not friendly. Our rooms got mixed up and we had to move 3 times. When we finally got our rooms, (we had 2 adjoining rooms), our keys were also mixed up, i was given my neighbors keys and vice-a-versa. We didnt get a key for mini bar, had to call and ask for one. At the end of stay, when we got our printout, our rooms had been charged for services that we had already paid for at time of purchase. Very frustrating experience.

Breathless!
By Nicole, 01/26/09
My family and I stayed 3 nights and was amazed. I as impressed with the seclusion and the ambiance. I kept forgetting I wasnt in Italy! My husband and I loved the water taxi. It was relaxing going back and forth and enjoying the scenery especially at night. The boys loved having freedom with the water taxi and not having to find their way back to the hotel. And while the kids were away My husband and I did play. The restaurant had an awesome breakfast bar with fresh fruit and unlimited choices and the small shops were fun to frequent. The atmomosphere was breathtaking and made you feel like royalty.

Great hotel.....and dog friendly!
By M, 07/07/08
I just stayed at the Portofino over the July 4th weekend. Staff was wonderful and the room was very comfortable. The beach pool was so much fun! The staff member that set up our chairs for us, Windy, was super nice and explained all the offerings of the pool to us. The water shuttle was very convenient and we never had to wait long. The only reason that I rated the value a little low was the restaurant where we had breakfast. We opted for the buffet breakfast because it looked wonderful.....but looks can be deceiving. The food was not good, which really surprised us. The french toast and pancakes were cold and we ended up not eating them. I recommend skipping the sit-down restaurant for breakfast (I don't know about dinner). I would suggest the deli for a sweet danish or bagel instead.

Overpriced poor service
By Art, 07/06/08
We stayed at the Portofino Bay at Universal for a week in December. First let me say that the restaurants in the vicinity were all excellent especially the deli. However the hotel itself was quite a disappointment. The help just didn't give a darn. For example, down the hall from our room there was a fire extenquisher in a case that was partially open during the entire time we were there. I would watch the help walk down the hall, including supervisors with clipboards, and no one ever fixed the door on the fire extinguisher. I guess it wasn't in their job description. There was no picture from the flat screen tv most of the time we were there. I was told that the outage was hotel wide. I had brought some newspapers from home to catch up on. The maid made the supreme mistake of throwing them away even though I had them neatly stacked on the desk to read one evening. I did get an apology for that one. to me the maid herself looked high as a kite judging by her eyes, though I am no expert in those matters. The furniture was all very worn but the mattress was quite good. Overall the place would have been good if the nightly rate was half what they were charging. One positive note is the boats to Universal park ran quite frequently and it was also a pleasant walk to the theme park. If you want to do laundry you have to cart your dirty clothes to the HardRock across the street.

Ahh the sweet life
By Adan, 06/29/08
We stayed for 3 nights. As Loews members we were able to get early check-in and our express passes. We also upgraded to the club level and had access to drinks, snacks, beer & wine daily. It was well worth the money. The scenery was beautiful and the restaurants were fantastic. The boat rides to and from the park were great. For those wanting another mode of transportation-walking (15 minutes); Bike taxi (3-5minutes)-but the boats run every 15-20 minutes from 8:30 until 2am. It was truly an Italian village experience. We will definitely return.

Beats a trip to Rome!
By HunterBellasmama, 06/12/08
The Portofino is absolutely gorgeous! The entire grounds are made to replicate the town of the same name in Italy, and what a job they did (but probably with cleaner streets)! Nightly entertainment includes Italian singers from a balcony overlooking the main courtyard (which overlooks the little river) The three pools are perfect & each in a different private locale on the grounds. The room was very nice- clean & very well decorated, & includes a phone next to the toilet, a luxury we didn't need to utilize, LOL. The restaraunts were very good too- We also took the complimentary boat/gordola -which runs every 15 min to "Citywalk" (lots of fun nightlife to 3am)I would highly recommend this hotel for a couple's get-away (if you're taking the kids to Disney there are more suitable places targeting families). Make sure you also go to Citywalk (via Gondola) for the souvenier shopping & sight-seeing. A short drive away, we also visited the Gaylord Palms Convention Center just to look around & it's amazing too, another must see.
