Castelletto di Montebenichi, Pergine Valdarno

The drive up to Montebenichi was breath-taking. The windy Tuscan road that led up to the small, walled village was lined with cypress trees, olive bushes and grape vines. The castle had an authentic feel, yet the accomodations were updated and decorated. We were in the upper suite overlooking the courtyard. Our only complaint were the beds--they were very hard and uncomfortable. The castle wine and olive oil were outstanding as was the local restaurants' ribolita.

After staying in Florence for a week, my wife and I retreated to the Castelleto for 3 nights and had a wonderful time. Situated in a small (like 30 people small) town in Tuscan countryside, it's a great space to slow down - and spend a few days taking walks, reading books and doing some wine tasting in nearby montalcino. Food and wine is excellent. Owners are very pleasant and gracious hosts. I'd definitely go back.
