My wife and I stayed at the Club Med belladonna in Luxor in January 2005 on our honeymoon. Our first impression of the hotel was pleasant. We arrived during the evening so we did not get to see the exterior, but the hotel reception area itself was nice with a small shop, a bar, a lounge, and an adequate reception desk. Our first hint of a potential problem was when the receptionist gave us our hotel documentation which was all in french! We soon realized that the entire hotel was catered to the French Europeans. The staff spoke french but tried to accomodate us in broken english. Luckily my wife and I speak french.
The room was average and as we expected. It was clean but had two single beds. This was corrected the next day with a call to the front desk. The maid pushed the beds together and added appropriate sheets. The bathroom was also clean and the shower very strong! Our view was by far the most spectacular part of the room. We had a balcony with view of the Nile. The TV channels were limited and mostly in french and arabic. There was one english channel - BBC News. The in-house movies were also french only. We asked several times at the front desk if they could activate the english subtitles (they were DVD movies), and although we were promised several times they would, they never did.
The hotel food is served in a large dining room with a smoking and non smoking section. It is buffet style food and they change the theme everynight. The food was average with some above average dishes. The bread was excellent! The restaurant staff were exceptional and always had a smile, except for the restaurant manager who always seemed annoyed. The seating is typical Club Med, round tables for 6 or 8 people. My wife and I being on our honeymoon did not want to socialize too much so we managed to get a table for two everynight by befriending and tipping one of the waiters.
The hotel is in the most ideal location directly on the Nile and minutes from the main downtown core. We walked everyday to our local destinations. Taxis and caleches were numerous right outside the hotel door.
The large pool was beautiful and there were ample lounge chairs. The hotel supplies the beach towels for its guests. There is a pool bar that is built into the pool. They had 2 ping pong tables nearby also. The activities were average and we found that there was not too much participation. Besides the bar, there is a nightclub on the premises but it was closed while we were there.
