do not stay here, EVER!!!!!!
By Ira, 01/20/09
zero stars. ironwood section smells like raw sewage. when we reported it hotel said they would look into it and did nothing when we returned to room late that eve, about 1130pm they then decide to move us to another section of hotel, and admitted maintenance knew in advance of problems in that area of hotel, yet still put us there. we had to pack up and during that process the people in next room who had checked in while we were out banged on our door and we in thinking it was the hotel to help us move opened the door whereupon a large, 6'5' well musceled drunk and irate and COMPLTELY NAKED englishman attempted to force his way into our room threating to kill us for making noise, and it took both of us to keep him out despite the fact he was joined in this endeavor by a equally totally naked woman and another totally naked man. we tried to calm him and explain and tell him to leave and also tried to get security via phone for 10 minutes and only got any response when we called room service, whereupon the midnight hotel security shift responded, head of security, who was an 18 year old kid with no others working with him. since one of us had been slighly injured in the fracas and the naked man could still re enter the fray, we had to insist on maricopa county sheriffs coming out. suffice to say this hotel enjoys too cozy a relationship with this sheriffs dept and nothing was done, we went to our new room only the next morning to be awaked at 801am and told WE HAD TO LEAVE. DO NOT STAY HERE!! you are not safe and the staff is terrible and dont waste your time or money. believe me this is short version, the long version is going on the litigation....

Not a resort
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/12/08
For me, this was not a good experience and I will not stay there again. Bell service may exist but it was not offered. My room was on the second floor and I wrenched my back trying to get my suitcase up the stairs (no elevators for the villas). Also, do not expect room service. The first night it was finally delivered 2 hours and three phone calls after I first ordered it. I tried again and ordered breakfast my last morning. It took 20 minutes to get someone on the phone to take my order (they do not have a system to place it ahead of time) and I finally checked out of my room over an hour after ordering without ever receiving breakfast. It didn’t show up on my bill, so I am assuming they lost it again. All I received from the person at the check out desk when I informed her of the problem was an, “I’m sorry.” The room was clean but very basic with an uncomfortable mattress and okay linens. I was glad I took my own comforter and pillow. The refrigerator was difficult to find (it was in the bedroom in the bottom of the armoire.) The televisions were unwatchable – 13 inch old TV’s with bad reception. If you are only looking for a bed and a beautiful outdoor setting, Carefree Resort and Villas may be adequate. However, it you want a true resort experience you will be disappointed.

I'll go back
By Leonard, 09/29/08
But I'll wait till off-season rates hit. Went as a quick get away with the wife and got the Deluxe Sonoran Villa. Room was excellent. Very large and comfortable. Had some views of mountains between buildings but landscaping did the rest for me. Room service was pricey for what you get. And was a little slow. Granted, the main hotel is 1/4 mile down the road from where we were. Beds were hard for my taste and was only 2 doubles instead of 1 king. Setting was beautiful and quiet. Noise ordinances in Carefree help that greatly. Recommend NOT going to the main hotel unless cost is of concern. Otherwise, get the villas. I'd definitely stay again but I'll wait till off-season rates. Living 20 miles away makes it convenient to stay here so can afford to wait until those rates drop.

A Fair Review
By xogeniousox, 08/19/08
A lot of people are extremely picky, so I felt being a middle-of-the road type person, my review would be helpful. The resort itself is really nice. Carefree is in the desert, so it is a desert landscape. Make sure you are at the resort at sunset, because it is really pretty. The front desk staff was not overly pleasant, but I wouldnt say they were rude. The check in process was pretty easy. The room was really large. We stayed in the delux resort room. The only complaints we had about our room were that there is a big gap in the ground and the door, so the hot air can come in. This is probably why it took a really long time for the room to cool down. It was over 80 degrees when we got into the room, and it was after midnight before the thermostat read 74. It was pretty uncomfortable for a while. It happened to rain the night we stayed, and because of the gap in the front door, all of the bugs outside wanted to come in. We put towels in the gap and it prevented anything from getting in, but if you are skiddish of bugs, DO NOT stay in Carefree or Cave Creek because it is the desert... and you cannot get away from them indoors or out. The room was clean, the TV was great, and the bathroom had the expected immenities. Large stone shower, but no bath. We attempted to order room service because it was raining heavily and we could not go out. Unfortunately due to rennovations the bar was only serving a small menu of four items. I am vegetarian, so unfortunately I could not order off of this menu. The ice machine in our area was broken. I requested they bring ice to the room, but because it was "dinner" time everyone was too busy. I had to walk to the saloon to get the ice myself. We went horseback riding the following day and requested late check out. They were able to accomodate this, so we were happy on that front. Overall the experience was not bad, but if you are picky you might select another place to stay because this is not a top-notch facility. We got an excellent room rate, and we got what we paid for, but we were certainly not blown away by the place. If you have a family the pool looked great, the rooms are large, and the property is nice... so I would recommend staying here if you are a standard middle class family. If you are picky, looking for a romantic getaway or hate bugs, I would stay somewhere else. We stayed Fri 8/15/08 and left Sat 8/16/08. Good luck - Hope this review helps!

ROACHES AND TERRIBLE ROOM SERVICE!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/10/08
There was basically NO ROOM SERVICE! Apparently a rain storm flooded the kitchen and the health department would not let them cook in the kitchen. So instead, they have buffet style eating. (the catch is you have to pay $25 dollars ea. even if you only want a burger for dinner) Breakfast and lunch were very similar. Also, there were 2 COCKROACHES in the room (Big NICE Villa Room) and 1 ROACH ran across the table at the cafeteria style dinner. So the Resorts failure to be prepared for rain ends up costing the people a lot more and the hours for eating were limited and self served. Does that sound like Resort style service? Not like any others I've been to. Definitely pick a different place if you like to get what you pay for. The staff that I spoke with seemed very nice and concerned. It must just be BAD MANAGEMENT. When asked "how my stay was?" I politely explained the problems. In Respose I was told "sorry you didn't have a nice time"

Choose another Resort!!!
By Bingo, 07/27/08
I've stayed in a number of resorts in the area, and this is by far the worst. The rooms that I stayed in at this 'resort' are musty, moldy, and have a 'Motel 6' feel. You can also hear your neighbors at all hours. The staff is nice, but overall there was no real quality control here. It's an old resort that just seems to do the bare minimum to get you through your stay. I will never stay there again -- especially when the resorts just down the road are so much better. If you have a choice between the Carefree Resort or another nearby hotel, choose another hotel or resort!! You will be happy you did!!

What A Disappointment!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 07/02/08
My brother was married at the resort in June/2008. We had many family members and friends come in from out of town. First, we were supposed to have a "block" of rooms. This did not happen. Everyone was spread out everywhere. Next, one family friend arrived at the resort at about 1am due to her flight begin delayed because of bad weather. She went into her room and her bedspread and sheets had "bodily fluids" all over it. She requested a room change; didn't happen. Then a security guard came to her room handed her some clean sheets and left. The next day she went to shower and all the towels were dirty! Needless to say, she checked out and went to say in a room with another one of our family friends. Next, my sister had to call to have her room cleaned. She took her kids to the pool so housekeeping would have time to clean and then she could come back in the afternoon and get ready for the wedding. When she returned to her room around 3pm it was the same as she left it. The majority of the chairs around the pool were dirty and the cabanas were not worth what we paid. The desk staff was so stupid! Just a bunch of young kids with big attitudes and jerk front desk manager named "Randy" who obviously only hires young girls with big boobs to work at the front desk. He really has some attitude. The food was average and presentation was nothing to be impressed about. I would not recommend staying at this resort or planning any type of event there. You will be disappointed.
