Close to Garden Clean- But !
By Melissa S, 3/15/10
Our stay was alright. The Room layout was nice and a good size but with windows looking at nothing but inside of a open square in the center of the building I started to get a little claustrophobic with thoughts of god forbid theres a fire Im stuck in my room no way out on the 4th floor. Not even if I wanted to stand on the balcony, there was not one. The windows in our room were about 5 ft up and were drafty and would not lock. They actually were open when we went into our room (March in Mass it was about 39 out) The only good thing about the hotel was it was clean. The staff who checked us into our room was very rude, morning staff was friendly. One thing that is not listed on the site when booking is they charge a extra 100- to your account, credit or debit card- which will be released back to you in 10-14 days incase you damage anything. I was a bit aggravated with that since we were staying away from home $150 for the hotel $35 for their parking, $350 for our concert tickets $100 for babysitter for the night it was a rather expense taking a extra 100 out of my account I don’t know about you but when Im spending that much I don’t usually have a spare hundred laying around to be tied up for 2 wks, I couldn’t check in unless I gave him a card he could use so I gave him my bank card & I never saw a 100 charge but he said it went through. With a exception of the above I would stay at the hotel again ONLY b/c its about a 30 ft easy walk in the rain drunk with heels to the Garden.. If there was a closer Option I would go elsewhere but theres nothing closer then this ! There also is a note if you smoke in your room & its non smoking you will be charge $250 on your card for a clean up fee.

Pay the extra $$ and stay someplace better
By 6-4 and rising, 3/28/08
Like the other reviews, this place is in an alley. There are bums laying around and they do hit you up for money everytime they see you - very annoying. My room had a musty odor to it and had no air conditioning. I stayed there in early May and my room was about 90 degrees (for some reason?). So I had to have the window open (because the air didn't work) to get somewhat comfortable in the uncomfortable bed. Of course my window faced the alley and the building 10 feet away so all I heard was noise all night. The furniture was very outdated and the entire hotel had a cheap feel to it. It seemed to me like it was trying to be a Hilton in disguise. If you are looking for parking, then you have to park in the parking garage which is about two blocks away at a cool $25 a night. The only real positive about this place is that it does have some bars and Hooters right there, and the TB Banknorth Center (Celtics) is right across the street. Save yourself some disappointment and stay someplace else.

If you like brown stains on the walls, you'll LOVE This place!
By Jeff, 10/29/07
Likes: Close to fun bars, Canal Street (1 block away), good central location if you are trying to pack in a lot of Boston in one trip. Next to the T-line. Dislikes: Hmmm where do we start? We were in a room next to the lobby and on the other side of us was the main in/out door to the stairs that lead to the street. We counted and heard that door open and close about 100 times during each night. The bed was on a slope, so whenever I rolled over to kiss my boyfriend goodnight, I ended up rolling right onto the floor. The shower spigot was cocked to one side so badly and loose, that when we turned it on, it flooded the ceiling, walls, floors, toilet, everywhere! All in all, we knew we were going to be staying in a place like this from the start, so it't not like our expectations weren't met. If you are looking for a good deal, which in Boston means paying $150 a night even on a weeknight, to stay in a 1-star hotel, you're in luck! GOOOOOOOO SHAWMUT!

First Time In Boston!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/18/07
My fiance and I were in Boston to visit family and we stayed at the Shawmut for 3 nites. Everyone was so wonderful to us. They treated us as if we were their only guests. The room was excellent and very spacious. Cleanliness is obviously very important to them as our accomodations were spotless. I can't say enough about the location. As a first time visitor I was very pleased with the location. Everything we needed was right nearby. Can't wait to go back in '08!

good deal in Boston
By Sandy, 8/12/07
Very helpful staff, they allowed us to check in early after we had traveled all night. The excellent location, plus decent price made it a good deal.

safe and excellent value
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/29/07
Nothing to dislike. Great room rates. I stayed with my 11 year old daughter. The huge room with 2 double beds had everything you could need including microwave and a kitchen sink! The private bathroom was very clean with plentiful pristine white towels. The mornings were a treat, just down from our room was the complimentary breakfast room(eat as much as you like continental breakfast) all times of the day and night was free coffee, tea and fresh water. Staff were great, friendly and very helpful. Location was great, plenty of restaurants or bars(the hotel itself was lovely and quiet) Walking distance to the very handy North Station, Quincy Market and Boston Common. We will definitely be making a return trip.

not so great
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/27/07
The place was located on an alley with lots of bars and homeless people. There is no parking which is note noted anywhere, and the room was really ugly and the bed extremely uncomfortable. The A/C didn't work and the place smelled. Front desk guy was really nice, but it didn't make up for the grossness of the hotel! I wouldn't recommend going here!

MOUSE VISIT
By C, 5/8/07
My daughter was put up at the Shawmut Inn by her College as she was in town for an award. I went to stay with her so she would not be alone for the night. There are homeless people sleeping outside, who regularly beg as you go in and out. The room, while clean, was extremely run down. The drawers were hanging off the bureau, the lamp shade was broken/cracked and dig not fit the lamp. The overall lighting was dingy. To top off our lovley stay a mouse ran through the room about 11pm that evening. The manger on duty when asked if had a problem with mice stated "sometimes". We were not offered another room, so we slept with all our belongings on the beds. Truley a forgetable place.

Good for a night
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/26/06
This hotel had a strong musty smell. It is clearly an old place with odd room layout and dirty old furniture. The location is a bit sketchy for safety reasons and is possibly a great value for what you pay. Good place for a guy to spend 1 night near the heart of Downtown Boston.
