Exellent location for taking in the sights.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/3/11
Loved the freindly owners, shortly after checking in we noticed someone broken down on the road. By the time I got down there to help them the owner was already there. we were unable to get his car started so Butch gave them a ride into town to get help. They were very freindly and helpfull. The room was beautifull, not new and fancy but very clean and well kept. My wife loved the decor, (brownie points for me on that one). If you like new and fancy please stay in town and don't ruin the nature for the rest of us. We couldn't be happier. We want to come back in the summer. Can't wait to watch the lake boats coming and going. Hope they let me have a cigar on the deck. The only possable downside, the parking lot and walks were a little trecherous from ice buildup from the nice weather the previous week. But I was glad they left it alone and did not try to melt it with chemicals like they do in "town". They make such a mess of everything too. It was a nice change of pace for me. If I fall on your ice it isn't your fault is how I look at things. Some folks are not that way. Hope they stay in town as well, makes for a better time for the reat of us. Thanks for the great breakfast. Sorry we could not stay longer.

Best Place for Relaxing Getaway
By Mary JaneZ, 8/17/08
I'm not into fancy hotels and resorts, when I found the Inn on Gitche Gumee I knew it was where I wanted to celebrate my 55th birthday. I like the beautiful view of Lake Superior. It was across the road, not 10 miles away. I liked the location, I liked the room I stayed at. I especially enjoyed the coffee Julie had ready every morning on the deck. It was the most relaxing and beautiful place to enjoy my morning coffee. We had maid service everyday and the room was very comfortable, very clean. The other guests were friendly and resepectful of other guests. Julie and Butch were very helpful and very friendly. For those with negative comments, this is not your 5 star hotel with luxuries and service you receive only because it's their job. The Inn on Gitche Gumee is a rustic get away surrounded by nature with comfortable amenities, the service you receive is service from friendly people who truly want you to enjoy your visit, their town of Duluth and the Northshore. If you're looking to spend time away from the fast pace of the city, The Inn on Gitche Gumee rates 5 stars in my book of places to stay. Yes, I will go back.

Fantastic!
By Arah, 5/6/07
Pros: Our cabin, called "The Cabin" was gorgeously decorated with home items and very comfortable. It had a gorgeous view of Lake Superior. Lovely. Excellent price! The included soap was a wonderfully scented handmade soap. The owners were very amicable and answered questions about distances. They also made us a switch (for a TV with a VCR) when requested. The Inn is located on the North Shore Scenic Drive, which is gorgeous. Cons: The Inn is located a couple of miles out of Duluth the city, so it does take about 8 min? or so to reach the outskirts of the city. One time when we left early, we needed directions, but no one was in the office. This only happened once. We went in late April/early May, and our room could be a little chilly at night. Overall impressions: We ended up staying an extra day. The inn is wonderful, an excellent bargain, and we would return again. Hope you enjoy your stay!

relaxing weekend
By tovah3us, 3/14/07
Perfect getaway and located so that we could enjoy Duluth as well as drive up the North Shore. Owners attended to our needs but were not overly friendly. I would go back again.

We will never go back
By Barbara, 3/25/06
Never saw Julie and Butch, No decent parking, and you can hear people in the office going in and out. Nothing to offer and watch the fine print they don't tell you things when you book about prices and extra people, a place that can sleep 8 shouldn't charge extra for 4 people
