Laughing Horse Inn B & B, Taos

I've been staying at the Laughing Horse for close to 20 years. In that time I've seen it evolve and change.. This trip felt different without use of the kitchen...sad.....I had such wonderful memories of cooking with new found friends....In spite of that... we we very much enjoyed hanging out with Jeff and Anna. Jeff was kind enough to share wine with two middle aged women in the hot tub...Thanks for laughing at our jokes Jeff...Such a sweet couple. We really enjoyed our time there and will return always..If you're looking for the typical B&B..pass this one by..but if Unique is more your style...You'll love it here! I loved the loft which is like a big tree house! There are giant windows from the floor to the ceiling which open out on the balcony. There is a view of the trees and birds in the morning , and the sound of rushing water from the near-by stream. The loft has a giant room with a new KING-SIZE mattress and overhead bed, and another room with a Queen-size bed in it. There is a separate bathroom and a shower, which I liked, cause I could take a shower as my husband used the OTHER room! haha The HOTTUB was great! The breakfast was GREAT with a homemade Quiche, fresh fruit, muffins and plenty other options. I was really impressed! This place is hard to explain to someone who has not been to The Laughing Horse Inn! It is something you should experience for yourself( the many nooks and crannys) excentric and historical in the same shot! the EARTH SHIP is one-of-a-kind. You can see all the work the new managers (Jeff and Adrianna) have done, including a good cleaning of the place (inside and outside). Great Decor, it is like you stepped back in time! I highly recommend this place, and will tell all my friends and will be back again! Thanks for a wonderful trip to Taos!

We at the Laughing Horse Inn would like to comment on the disgruntled customer comments. The only fact in the whole comment is that we do not offer a communal kitchen. This is a B & B and it is also our home. As for out dated guide books and reviews from two years ago we really do not have any control over that. Prior to her arrival we had a lengthy phone correspondence with the customer regarding our Inn and what was available. She failed to mention that we allowed them to store their bicycles in a vacant room and have use of the hot tub outside of regular working hours. She also failed to mention that her group decided to spend a second night! My breakfast burritos are made from scratch, by me personally, and all of the guests devoured breakfast and said it was great! Her husband even asked me to package his wifes breakfast who had already left on her bike. As for children. We do allow guests traveling with children to stay with us. The other sixteen people staying with us raved about their stay and made gracious comments about how anxious they were to return. One woman in Her Group even wrote, paraphrasing, "A lovely place, very comfortable. Thank you for your gracious hospitality. Jenny" That being said I think she was the only one who did not enjoy her stay.

The new management has ruined the Laughing Horse. For almost twenty years I have stayed here, met new friends, cooked meals in the communal kitchen and enjoyed the unique character of the place. Now use of the kitchen is strictly forbidden, even though dozens of guides, websites and reviews advertise the open, communal kitchen. The breakfast offered was minimal and forgettable with premade/purchased burritos and grocery store white cinnamon rolls in a foil tray. Most of us skipped it. Our plans for cooking healthy meals were scrapped and our fresh food went to waste. During our stay, there were three local preschoolers dominating the communal spaces, morning and night, crying and screaming and occupying the hot tub. For $100 per night, it was a very poor bargain. I've paid $25 for better hostels nearby. I was truly embarrassed that I had brought our party of six here to stay for our Taos vacation. My honest, but respectful, communications to the manager were met with indifference and dishonesty. Sadly, I will not be returning.

New management (Jeff and Anna) are hard at work to update and respect the rustic atmosphere. There is nowhere in Taos where you will feel more at home away from home. Felt very safe and comfortable. Especially for a small young family. Every room has an extra bed.

The Laughing Horse Inn has just re-opened under new management. There are some upgrades but all are consistent with maintaining the unique funkiness that has made The Laughing Horse Inn a place that I never get tired of visiting. This adobe building has been a part of much of the history of Taos from Georgia O'Keeffe to D. H. Lawrence to earth ships. Jeanne, the manager is great.

I often travel alone and decided to stay at the Laughing Horse Inn both to meet new people and to take in an authentically historic B&B. I stayed in the Georgia O'Keefe room, mostly as she was one of the main reasons I took this trip. I admit that the bed felt as though it had been original to her time but the room itself was charming and cozy. There are 2 baths at the Inn which guests share but this didn't seem to be a problem even though all rooms were taken during my stay. Ramsies, the manager, was extremely friendly and helped to make me feel as though we were all guests in her lovely home. This very historic Inn isn't luxurious but it is extremely friendly and comfortable for anyone wanting to explore and meet new people. I would definitely stay there again.

Leading groups through Northern NM, I've stayed at the Horse a couple of times over the last 8 years or so and everyone has enjoyed it. I brought a group of 15 travelers to the Horse earlier this week and am sad to say that it was ABOMINABLE!! Evidently the Horse's new owner has failed to maintain both the grounds, kitchen, lounge and rooms relying on his underpaid and neglected staff to maintain a thread of normalcy. Unfortunately it's a dismal failure with dirty rooms and linens, unclean bathrooms (no toilet paper?!?!) and cheap supermarket breakfast items. Instead of serving as a steward for this historic inn the owner has allowed the Horse to fall into disrepair. Sad but true - the Horse's current website represents a happier and bygone era - the Horse is not habitable and should be closed immediately!

I have been to Taos twice. Both times I stayed in the Laughing Horse Inn. It is a bed and breakfast and more. The rooms are themed, cute but authentic. You smell wood burning incense and feel like you are camping but you aren't. The people are friendly and the prices fair. If you want full service hotel like amenities, this may not be the place for you. But if you want authentic Western life, friendly locals and the feel of a themed place that leaves a permanent memory in your soul. This is the place for you. I like the bigger rooms, but the little ones are cute and most have fireplaces I think. It is cute...and they make breakfast too. Just do it...you won't regret it. It makes Taos one of my favorite places in the US. Really!!!

An odd out-of-the-way place that's still not far from downtown Taos. Not for everybody, perhaps, but great for those looking for an experience and not just a place to sleep for the night. The building itself was interesting and fun to stay in, and had a nice, shady porch and yard. The service was great, as was the location. We certainly enjoyed conversing with the staff and other guests over breakfast (and a really good breakfast)-- it was a lot more like some of the better hostle experiences I've had than staying in a hotel. Everything was quite clean and functional, and I had my best night's sleep of our week-long trip on their beds. Highly recommended for those looking for something a little different in their trip, those who like to meet new and interesting people, or folks interested in local history. They have a great postcard selection, too.
