4 reviews for The Woodruff Collection of Inns, Luray
Ripped off.
By Eric, 01/26/10
Looks good on the website huh? Like the reviews on some of the other travel sites? So did we. We posted this review on some other sites after getting suckered by the good reviews and it was removed. Be careful where you get your information from. Not so good in real life. My wife and I tried to celebrate our first anniversary here. Upon arrival the place looked great, not as good as the pictures but still nice. Problem is the room we reserved was not in the Inn, it was in the "Woodruff House" a rundown boarding house, not on the same property and not 3 blocks away as we were told at check in, but on the other side of town. Not our idea of a bed and breakfast but we thought we would give it a try. The Woodruff house has 70's era disco kitchen and the basket of single serving bags of chips for the guests. On the way to the room we were greeted by peeling wall paper, dirty carpets and water stains (all very authentic for a vintage house). The room looked like it had been decorated by a dumpster diver from the local craft bazaar. The Carpet had the quality of something one would put on their patio in the 80's, and needed to be held down with your foot to close the door. Speaking of doors... THERE WAS NO DOOR ON THE BATHROOM! Privacy for the dingy little room was provided by a dusty old curtain. We were told it was temporary but was very obviously not. To add insult to injury when we asked for a different room we were told no ,when we asked for a refund we were told no. When we disputed the charge with Discover the owner sent Discover a letter telling a fictitious story claiming my wife and I were fighting and that I was shouting profanities at her and wouldn't leave until told to do so. For the record I am a nice guy, my wife is a sweetheart and this Inn almost ruined our anniversary.

I have eaten there several times
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/08/07
I visit Luray on the weekends and have eaten there several times. The food has always been good and the service has been mostly excellent - there have been one or two off times. I think service is just as an important a part of the dining experience as the food and I will return again.

Never again...

My fiancé and I recently made a trip to the Shenandoah National Park. Sunday night of our weekend trip we decided to find a nice place to eat dinner. We stumbled upon Woodruff Inn's restaurant. The place looked very nice from the outside and had about 4 other tables of people. The prices seemed a little expensive at first but it looked nice so we decided to stay. We arrived there around 6:30 and left after 9:30 because the service was so bad. We missed the nightly entertainment back at our resort. My fiancé ordered a steak; it was very tough and overcooked. He commented that the steak was the worst he has ever had. I ordered crab cakes, they lacked flavor and were not good at all. The risotto was good but that was about it. The worst part of the whole meal was not the food but the people working at the restaurant. The waiters were ok but took a long time to check on us and refill drinks. We asked for our check as soon as we finished because we were unhappy, after waiting about 20 minutes I asked again for the check and was told they were working on it, “we have been busy.” At this point there were about 7 tables out of 15 full. I would not call this busy by any means. We waited another 10 minutes for our check. We are planning to go back to the park because it was beautiful but we will never return to this awful restaurant. I would not recommend it to my worst enemy. If you want mediocre food and have three hours for dinner, enjoy! 75 dollars down the drain, we should have gone to KFC down the road.

PLEASE do not ruin your vacation by staying here
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/18/05
I guess I should have known when we arrived and saw the owners' two porsches parked oh so tactfully out front. What we got was a horribly decorated bright pink "victorian" home for 129 dollars (supposedly a deal), cluttered, and decorated with ugly faux antique tchotkes. I'm from small-town Ohio. I know this stuff. My house is similar, but bigger, more well kept, better adorned, more majestic, and my parents bought it for 20K. Yet here I am paying an excessive amount for a small, ugly version of my room. The guest book at the "Rose House" (hot pink) was empty. Here's why: No service unless you are the customer paying the most (I never saw the owner except when she was negotiating deals with the richer clientele, ie other family.) Very horrible taste (Christmas is over by January 15th). No perqs. Nothing. Even off-season. No personal contact. The "fireplace" works on, not wood, but toxic acetylene gel cannisters. How romantic (cough)! The house is run down and in a regular hilljack neighborhood (remember, I know this stuff, I'm from Ohio.) Ok, people. Why pay this obscene price for a subpar experience. If you pay for a B&B go some place with competition, Old Town Winchester or Lexington. Anywhere but here. The Shenandoah's are close wherever you are. I just don't get it. Maybe this profligate spending is a product of the east coast cost-of-living style or the fact that people in DC are transients with no taste who will pay anything for everything. Give me a break! We got nothing. And lady, if you read this, take down the XMAS theme and don't park your Porsche SUV and Boxster in front of your Inn. It stands out in what is essentially a blue collar mountain town.
