Built in 1829 as a French sea captain's home, Hotel 1829 has been a hotel off and on since 1900. Exposed brick and stone walls, tile floors, louvered shutters and mosquito nets over the beds take you back to the time when a Caribbean vacation was something different than a stay at a chain hotel. The location puts you right in the heart of Charlotte Amalie , a boon for visitors who want to get out and about. Do not neglect the hotel's eponymous restaurant. It is one of the best on the island.

be careful
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/08/09
While i was staying here the cleaning lady picked up my laptop by the screen and this cracked my screen. I took the computer to the manager and he refused to pay for it telling me that a power surge caused the damage. It it impossible for a power surge to physically crack a computer screen so the manager was lying to me to get out of this. He treated me like i was making this up to get a new computer. I ended up having to pay 1200 to get it fixed. I would not stay here if i had valuable electronics with me. The cleaning ladies have no clue how to handle expensive electronics.

We spend a week on St. Croix in a nice, but concrete hotel, so it was a wonderfull experience to stay in 1829. When you get use to all the stairs, the hotel just grow on you. The staff do their job, but if you get time to talk with them a new world open. The hotel is part of the Haagensen House tourist tour. I special feeling sitting with a cold beer and a group of tourist turns up. We got a fantastic invitation to the owns own balcony and what a view of the city, the harbour and the crusierships. The pool is small but so nice.

The bar wasn´t open when we visited the hotel. You get a good breakfast - if you ask for it. Best place was on the patio in front of the hotel, with a good view of the city.

Enjoyed the location and view
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/08/06
I stayed at this hotel in May of 2004 and found it to have a wonderful location and great view. I also really enjoyed the MGT of the place. Sometimes when I would ask about the ownership of the place the subject would be quickly changed. I never had that happen before. A cab driver knew all about the ownership and had some good history in that area. The morning breakfast was very good and a patio offers great views when eating. At night time a bar would open up and you could enjoy the night life and have the view there also. The pool was small but nice. It was cold in the pool so I only used it once. My room needed some work on it but then a lot of places do need that. I e-mailed the hotel a year after being there for rates and never did get any response. I know the rates normally go up slightly every year. When I made my origional reservation a few years ago they had a buy 6 nights get the 7th for free all over the island including this hotel. But when I checked out they said they knew nothing of it. I should have got it confirmed by e-mail. Anyway I will be in the Virgin Islands at the end of January 2006. Had Hotel 1829 got back with me I would be staying at their place. The main reasons that I would stay there again is the location, the nice view, and good customer service. Maybe in the future I will get a reply to my e-mail.

If you like history, you'll like this hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/02/05
It was very authentic and the manager and staff were very nice. There aren't glass windows, but the breeze is wonderful and the original stone/brick walls keep the room comfortable. It's 1 block away from the duty-free shopping and a great restaurant is next door (Herve's). The view was great and the mattresses were very hard.

Be Forwarned
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 05/02/05
The Hotel has no glass in the windows, just dusty screens and dark shutters. The air conditioner is working loudly and overtime to overcome the heat - 90 degrees + humidity. Hotel has not been kept up recently. Great potential, but found better value (and cleaner) elsewhere.
