Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort & Spa, Ocho Rios

This resort facility is excellent. With regard to pools, water-slide, beach, rooms, hotel and grounds -all first class. The alcoholic drinks are fine with a reasonable selection. The resort is a 10 minute walk to downtown Ocho Rios, and just a short $5 per person taxi ride to the Falls. Good for a family pool and beach vacation. However, the food is mediocre and not that enjoyable. All restaurants serve the same chicken, fish or pork -no beef, lamb, veal or goat. No curried food. The presentation of the food is fine and varies at the Chinese, Italian, Jamaican or Buffet restaurants but the selection is the same 3 basics and flavor is bland. Hors-d’oevres are OK. Chinese is the best although again not great. Breakfast buffet is very good, although closes at 10 am. Ownership of the resort is now Chinese and they are pinching pennies in the cuisine area, it seems. One is required to make restaurant reservations the previous day & sometimes one is told that all is booked out, but in fact there are plenty of empty tables -it is a game they play so insist on reservations. Wifi is limited to the main lobby and costs $30 per week. Trip from airport takes 90 minutes. Recommend this resort except for cuisine. We stayed in a two-bedroom suite that was superb with a grand view of the bay and pools and beach. Room service would be a plus but it is not available. If cuisine was USA quality the resort would be exceptional.

Someone broke into our room while we were sleeping.! We were in room 410 on the 4th floor in South Tower (with a terrace two stories below). Someone came from the balcony and took away our my handbag, wallet inside it and my boyfriends wallet and Iphone 4S The worst part was.. the hotel handled it very poorely. Considering this is a very old and established hotel, one would have thought that they knew how to handle this kind of situation but infact the Security Manager was alluding that we staged the whole event. Why would we stage something like this and ruin our vacation.? The hotel didn't compensate us or provided any kind of assurance. Rather than handling the Security issue, they were in denial that someone could come to our room from the balcony. We heard this has happened couple of times before. Really management should be ashamed of how they handled this situation. We have even filed a complain to Jamaican Tourism board regarding our situation Please Do NOT STAY HERE.! This hotel really needs to reconsider their security and guest relations.

My boyfriend and I stayed here from 6-1-12- 6-6-12. We booked our vacation through AppleVacations and only payed 851 per person. When first arrived at the hotel we had to wait one hour before we could check in after traveling all day. The room on the north side tower was horrible. There were holes in the ceiling and the floors were dirty. We called the front desk to complain and they told us that they would not have another room available until the next day. After arguing with Natasha we finally spoke to a woman name Stacy at the front desk who was helpful. Please for ask novated room on the southside. The food is okay, but the late night grill is horrible hotdogs, hamburgers, fries, and grill cheese every day and night. The resort it's self is nice. Some of the women are rude. The drinks are okay. The non-motorized sports are okay because they are free. We had a ball on the hobie. The hotel is in the inner-city of ochos ricos do not go to town at night. its not safe. please read all reviews cause it is exactly how people explain it. overall we had a great trip.

This hotel was really nice, clean, respectful people, staff was great but overall it was a really good stya. The food was amazing and the rooms were clean.

Just hoping to help you not make the mistake I did . Do not waste your time going to Jamaica ..Florida is way beeter and less expensive. Its not a tropical paradise it is pretty run down .If you have your own boat and intend to hope or hang by the cost line it might be nice. The resorts are basic . If you like the inclusive drink all day pass out by 11pm great but its cheaper to do that in Florida. Watch out for apple and vacations to go .com..the adds are a bit decieving. Inclusive it food drinks and the room..Hidden cost . Even the paid help that you are told you don't need to tip with make you feel bad and stand with there hand out. Don't waste your time shopping in town,shopping sucks. People are beggers,pushy liers ..beware.And its only basic t shirts and mugs nothing really great. The food is basic ,the fruit isn't that great and no real seafood at the resort. Funny since your ina tropical area surrounded by water. The re use left overs in the next basic meals . Adventure.. you will pay $200 and up for anything outside the resort. We are a family of 3 and spent $5000 and the wife did not participate in all events to save money.. Florida would have been great food ,large condo room 2 bedroom with master spa and a kitchen $280 a week.We could have even went out to buy our own food to save a few dollars and cooked it at our Florida condo.. Not in Jamaica .. And the room 2 bed basic super 8 motel style to stay in. Reasons for vacation comparison: Florida Jamaica Food variety ,great seafood all inclusive,basic fare,no seafood(just some fish) adventure lots to do,lots to explore not much ,dirty, pay ectra outside resort Shopping lots of interesting items and places t shirts and mugs rooms spacious clean very private small ,not very clean ,expensive for size money family of 3 $ 3000 from Green bay $5000 from Green bay Would never go back ,Florida has so much to offer we have been ther 4 times and still have lots to do.If you really want to go somewhere besides Florida look into Hawaii at least there is real beautiful scenery .Cost I am sure will be up there. But Jamaica is a waste..

We have stayed at this property twice before, so we know first hand what to expect. Your vacation is what you make it. In previous stays we were treated like royalty. Nothing but good things to say about the staff and management. The food and rooms were always first class. Sure there may be a hiccup or two but no big deals. We are so looking forward to returning 2/29/12-3/7/12 for another Jamaican Grande vacation. Counting down the days!! Thanks, Virgil McGinnis

Oh where to begin with the dislikes????? horrid guest reception from front desk staff! Apple needs to properly rate this property as a maybe 2 apple! The food is disgusting! There are cats wandering the buffet and we all thought that cat was on the menu! Disgusting Cant get a reservation at one of the three terrible restaurants. Towel service - cannot get towels without deposit and cant get a towel because they always run out. Unless you are awake and ready to venture down to the pool/beach ares - you are SOL! not even close to enough chairs for the amount of people. Paid extra for "oceanfront" Looked out at blacktop roof then waited 24 hours for a new room that was actually kind of clean! I would not be complaining but we paid $1300 per person for 1 week times 16 people. Want a cocktail - forget about it unless you like standing in line for 30 minutes only to receive your drink in a 6 oz glass. run dont walk from this property!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am staying here at this hotel in Ocho Rios as I type this. You figure on vacation...... Why is this person typing this on the first day of his vacation? Because everyone needs to know to never come to this place and asap know this. It took over an hour to check in. After this we found our room to have: 1. A key not a key card a key that barely worked. 2. A TV that did not work. 3. A phone that did not work 4. A plugged toilet 5. A view of the roof of the buliding (no ocean view like we paid for) 6. No towels in the room So after checking in we head down to the dinner buffet. None of the restaurants had reservations available for the next week and we were told we could try getting into them but would have to get there when they opened at 6:00. Yeah 6:00 am. The dinner buffet was terrible. We were the first people in line and the food was cold. The fish was cold. They did have the fall back plan of a hamburger though. No buns the one time I went up and then came back and no burgers this time. The bar ran out of cups and ice at 10:00 pm last night and the entertainment was extemely poor. Soooo back to the rooms. They decide to move us to a different rooom and they take us there. I check the room for 5 minutes and make sure everything works but miss the phone that doesn't work. Miss the mold all over the ceiling. The gentlemen shows me the view now too and low and behold it is of another roof. Terrible! I was in line this morning at 6:30 behind the other 3 guests complaining about their rooms and was waiting for a manager who never came out to speak with me. Someone was supposed to come and check the room but no one came. This place is terrible and I would highly recommend not coming here. I am on a trip for work (why they sent us here I have no idea). Of the 15 or so couples everyone has issues with their rooms! Every single person! It is increbile. I just went to my managers room to ask if I can leave early to go back to Wisconsin and our snow! That is how bad this place is. Avoid this place at all costs!!!! In the computer lab I casually asked the lady next to me about her stay and she laughed and went over the same problems we are having! Again avoid this place at all cost!!!!!!!!!!

The beach was nice and servers and housekeeping staff were very friendly. Disliked - room received double bed room when king was reserved, food was bad, room has balcony and view but phone didn't work, bathroom door wouldn't shut, dresser drawer wouldn't open, didn't even have a toilet paper roll hanger in the bathroom. Front desk staff was very uneducated in good management of a hotel. Would not recommend this hotel and will never return to it.

I enjoyed my stay at Jamaica Grande. The food was plentiful, entertainment was non- stop, people very helpful and friendly. The room was a little old yet clean and efficient. The alcoholic beverages were unlimited but you and to find the right bar tender because some bar tenders made their drinks too watery. Other than that the Resort was really nice especially for the rate.
