Don't buy a timeshare in the Royal Resorts!

The resort itself is great, unless you own one. I bought a unit in one of the "peak" weeks, with the understanding that it would be easy to trade for a different week. However, you have to belong to the exchange club (annual fee), or pay 159 for an "internal" transfer. Unless they find a member who is trading from the week you want to the week you own -- no such luck. Also, before you buy, check out the commission to sell the unit, it is 20% or 25%. If you want to go, you are much better off renting for the week you want, since you pay the annual association fee (now about $1,000) whether you go or not. You can "rent" out your week, but good luck, since there are so many units on the rental market. All in all, buying a unit in one of the Royal resorts was one of the biggest mistakes that I made. Have been trying to sell for 2 years now to get out of it, knowing now that I will never break even because of their commission structure.
