It's not for everyone, but I loved it!

If you're use to amenities like television, or telephone, or carpeting for that matter, then this place is not for you.
However, if you want a real Mexican flavor to your vacation, this place can't be beat.
We had rented a beachfront (suite?), number 103. It was ground floor, ocean view and just 10 yards from the pool area on the right. It also had a patio with 2 chairs and a small table, overlooking the ocean.
First thing I noticed that the walls were made of old brick, and the floor was a mixture of concrete and stone. Room had 2 double beds, on a floor raised about 6 inches (be careful if you get up in the middle of the night!) And the decor was typically hand-crafted Mexican.
It rained like crazy each night, but it was fun to open the big wooden doors on the patio wall and just watch the monsoon and lightning and thunder on the ocean (August is in the heart of the rainy season).
Sitting on the patio one afternoon, one of the waiters who service the beach area walked over to empty an ash tray, and asked if we needed anything. Well, that lead to frozen margaritas, and a complete lunch served on our patio (including a table!)
Location is superb. You can walk to the Rio Cuale island where you'll find Oscar's Restaurant (very good, and have the Mexican coffee after dinner at night, it's a real tableside show! Fire and all!), or just up the island is The River Cafe and also The Bistro (closed in August, but re-opens in October.)
Good coffee in the morning can be had next door to Molino heading down the beach 50 feet, in the first condo complex. Cinnamon flavored and just right. Good breakfast too, $10.00 for two).
Just outside the lobbie area, across the street is a great place to buy Mexican sandals, handmade for about 20 bucks or so.
And down a block or two from that is Mariachi Loco, a fun place if you enjoy that type of music. The night we were there, there was a $5.00 cover charge, but a 12 piece band was playing and they weree great. We only had drinks but they do serve food as well.
I wouldn't hesitate staying at this hotel again, but I would tell my friends what to expect. (like older people with canes or walkers would have a tough time walking the grounds). I imagine this place 50 years ago was considered amazing, and it still is, but for different reasons.
If you look carefully in the trees by the river, they're filled with birds and we even saw 2 four foot iguanas.
