Experience of a Wilma Evacuee
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/27/05
I was attending a scientific workshop in Cancun when Hurricane Wilma emerged. There were about 30 of us. We made reservations at this hotel sight unseen. We left Cancun by bus at 10 PM to avoid Wilma. We arrived in Merida at 3:30 AM. The staff at the hotel was friendly, professional and efficient. We were assigned rooms by 3:45 AM. A hot breakfast was waiting for us, as we requested, at 9:00 AM. The staff prepared a conference room for us to continue the conference at 10 AM. Their on-site travel agency helped us rearrange our flights after the Cancun Airport was closed.
For security purposes, there was only 1 key issued for each room. Persons sharing rooms left the key at the desk when they were elsewhere. None of us experienced any loss of property at the hotel.
This older hotel has been well-maintained. The rooms were mopped daily. The beds were hard. The pillows were soft. The linens were clean and in good repair. There was no algae in the pool and no mold.
I also recommend their dining room. The buffet was attractively arranged with plenty of the traditional Mexican foods including fruit, flan, and rolls!
The hotel is convenient to the main square, the church, and shopping. The neighborhood looks poor, but a school is adjacent to the hotel. I was not afraid to walk down the street after dark.
