Changed for the good!!
By Robert G, 11/12/08
The reviews here are outdated. As of early this year the Yellowknife Inn has been completly renovated. The rooms, hallways, lobbys and meeting rooms are all new and improved. the hotel is located downtown and is within walking distance of all areas of interest. Give the old girl another chance!!

Terrible overall experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/20/06
I recently stayed at the Yellowknife In, in Yellowknife North West Territories, Canada. I feel that the location was excellent, on top of the largest shopping mall in the NWT as well as in the very center of the city of Yellowknife. The service however is another story. I felt that I had more knowledge than the people I was dealing with at the front desk, and when they asked for assistance from the GM, he said just do whatever it takes to make it right as he was a new manager and didn't know the operation well enough at that time. I appreciate his will to make it right, but he seemed just in a hurry to end the conversation and escape without hearing my comments or answering my questions. The staff there seemed very inexperienced and not even interested in customer service and the rooms that I was shown were run down and not maintained. There was paint chipped off the wall and structural damage , and the carpets were stained and the rooms smelled foul. The explaination I recieved from the maintenance worker on duty was that the building is an old building and there is nothing they can do about it. To add to my distress there was no parking, the front desk personel forgot to give me a wake up call and there were drunk people passed out in the lobby while the security guard present sat and ate chips while listening to an mp3 player. The Yellowknife Inn is a great location , but it is definately not worth the price of the room rates. I have recieved much better service and a cleaner environment from small drive in motels. I was surprised that staying at a large hotel carrying the capital city's name and boasting to be a full service, customer friendly hotel could turn out to be such a let down. I would reccommend that anyone planning to stay at the Yellowknife Inn, ask the staff to see the rooms prior to checking in.

I can't wait to go back but not at the Yellowknife Inn
By thawenratel, 7/10/05
For starters the room had a bad smell. There was beer caps stuck on the ceiling, gum saturated into the rug no air conditioning these are just my comlpaints, i was there with the AFN meeting, everyone was talking about the conditions in the rooms and suggest we never recommend the hotel to anyone, unless improvements are made. I heard a lot of people complain about this hotel the conditions the rooms were in, i was in room 325 from the 3rd.and departured on July 8th.for the AFN assembly.

Yellowkinfe Inn - there are better places
By Steven Bennett, 7/4/04
Not impressed.

First the good points - the staff was friendly and the hotel is conveniently located right in the heart of downtown Yellowkinfe.

Unfortunately, the hotel is old. Some attempt has been made to fix up the rooms in the recent past, but all in all it is poorly done. I reserved a "suite", only to be given a tiny room with one bed and not much else. Upon complaining to the desk, I was told that I could have a suite, but only if I paid an extra $120 for my stay. My reservation confirmation clearly stated a "Suite with a pullout couch", but it appears that the hotel was making an attempt to squeeze some extra money out of me. After considerable discussion, I did get the room I reserved at the agreed price.

Even the downtown location can be seen as a bit of a negative. The residents of Yellowknife are not the best for keeping the mufflers on their cars and motorcycles in fine tune and it is very noisy. The window in my room had a gap on one edge large enough to put my baby finger through so it did little to keep out the noise. It was summer when I was there, but I hate to think of the draft in winter in this arctic city.

On a subsequent visit to Yellowkinfe, I stayed at Chateau Nova, only about 4 blocks from the Yellowknife inn - If you go to Yellowknife (and it is worth going), I strongly suggest the Chateau Nova. The prices are just a few dollars more and well worth it.
