Power outtage?
My client booked me into the Sutton Place for a two-night business trip on July 11-12 2006. I looked forward to staying in this luxury hotel, as in the US my travel is usually budget-oriented (government rates). There were five of us that planned to work late into the night on an important presentation, so imagine our dismay when we were told at check-in that the hotel's power would be out from midnight to 5am! This was for some kind of maintenance and testing. It was cause for a restless sleep, as several of us kept waking up, worried that somehow we would not get our wake-up calls or just in general unsettled about the thought of a hotel with NO power. We discovered the next morning that the power was never turned off. I suppose it's naive to expect any hotel to warn you in advance that there is a planned power cut-off, for fear of lost business, but we were extremely annoyed to be advised of this news at check-in. Other than that, the hotel was lovely. The staff was extremely professional and courteous. The room was quiet and spacious, with traditional decor and complimentary robes, hair dryer, umbrella, toiletries, newspaper, chocolates and turn-down service. No vending machines, but there is a gift shop with snacks and sodas and a grocer next door and a mini-bar in the room. Wireless or DSL connection is $15 per day. I dashed across the street to Denny's for an inexpensive breakfast and ate all my other meals in Yaletown restaurants, so I can't comment on the hotel's restaurants. My colleagues said the gym equipment was high quality. Stars and celebrities stay in this hotel, which is across the street from Paramount Pictures and has luxury apartments in a separate tower, and I saw Matthew Broderick in the hotel elevator! Fun. I would stay in this hotel again.
