musty, smoky, filthy old rooming house of a hotel
By sam, 4/29/10
Billed as a 1920's, remodeled jewel of a luxury hotel, this place is just a pig in lipstick. I asked for a recieved one of the remodeled rooms; the most expensive one they had and when we got to the room, steam heat, NO AC, half the windows had no screens, and there must have been over 10 coats of paint on the thick old plaster walls and wood? trim. Room was filthy with sex stains on the decorative bed pillows, hairs all over the bed and dead bugs everywhere. Remodeled room furniture was ok..but less than expected from luxury hotel. Billed as non-smoking throughout yet the halls, and the rooms smell strongly of cigerette smoke; could not get away from the smell no matter where we went. There were NO persons employed to help with luggage or anything else and the only employee we spotted was the front desk person (must say that he tried ..but what can he do?). Apparently this place is over half filled with appartments that are intermixed with the hotel rooms and the tenents are mostly lower income, lower class (though cheerful for the most part) people who could give a darned less whether you hear their arguments, or smell their smoke. Don't bother to complain or call the owner or manager as, though the number is available, the don't answer and that voicemail box is full all the time. Oh, they have free breakfast, but..are you ready for this, when we got down there at 9:30 am, there were three boxes of cerial, two english muffins, no coffee, no milk left. There was a hot waffle iron there, and batter in the mini fridge; but you had to make it yourself if you wanted it and they were out of butter and syrup. Oh..and the bed was as hard as a rock and feld like sleeping on sandpaper as they has some way long ago worn out 1/2" matress pad under the sheets that was actually so old that it was hard on the foam nubs. There were some good things about the astor; 1) the grandfather clock in the lobby is a treasure of victorian style and bongs nicely 2) parking was $5 a night No matter what price you get this for, resist..don't do it..motel 6 is a better room with more amenities..and that is saying something.

Wonderful place to stay.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 3/22/08
A beautifully restored landmark of Old Milwaukee, perfect for a weekend in the city. It offers a rare, quiet elegance, in a superb location overlooking the lakefront, just a short distance from downtown amenities. As is characteristic of hotels of this gracious era, the room was small, but very well appointed, and I found the door ventilation system both charming and effective. One has to love old houses and hotels to be comfortable here, as it is a step back in time. The shuttle service was an excellent perk, and the driver was most congenial and helpful.

Could be a nice place if upgraded...
By dids, 1/7/08
Some of us decided to get a suite there for New Years Eve. We should of went with a little more expensive hotel. This hotel was dirty, the bathroom was disgusting, no one could of paid me enough to take a shower in the stained tub. The bathroom window was cracked and had towels squished all around it (i am assuming it leaked). Also, the phone system in the hotel didn't work and when our "free shuttle" dropped us off at the casino we couldn't get a hold of anyone once we were ready to leave. Instead we begged the casino bus to take us back to our hotel. Once we returned the front desk was empty although it states someone was available 24 hrs a day. I wouldn't recommend this hotel unless they upgraded. It could be a great historic hotel with some work.

Nice blend of old and new...
By K Fitz, 7/11/06
This is a grand old hotel that has had some remodeling to bring it into the 21st century while maintaining its traditional roots. It is located in a very quaint neighborhood, surrounded by lovely, stately old churches. I booked the room because I saw a review that said the rooms were clean and the shuttle service was convenient, and this was the case for me as well. We attended a concert at summerfest and the driver knew how to miss all the traffic, and we were dropped off at the main gait, no waiting in line anywhere. You aren't sure what to think when you hear that there are year-round residents that live here, but I think that added to the individuality of this hotel. I would definitely stay there again. P.S. - Continental breakfast, not so much...

The lobby is fancy. The fitness room is suburb. The outside doesn,t look attracting, But I love the hotel anyway! I would love to come again!

Great New Management
By AirwavesDJ, 10/7/05
The Astor Hotel has defenitley done a great job of cleaning up under there new manager. He was great to work with in planning for my wedding and has really cleaned up the place and made the staff extremely friendly. Much nicer than my original walk through a year ago. This hotel is a must for people who enjoy being treated like a guest should be!

Poor service
By Michael Lee, 8/22/05
My room was not changed over the weekend I stayed there despite repeated requests for new towels. Also the staff is surly with a few notable exceptions and the rooms are tiny.

CHARM BY THE LAKE
By saddam, 5/19/05
This is a fine old hotel in a great location. Lake Michigan is right at your doorstep as is the beautiful lakefront park. The 1920's style of the building and interior is warm and comfortable. The restaurant is good and the location gives you many options for dining. With downtown Milwaukee a stones throw away, shopping and dining options abound. Take a bus to see the Pabst Mansion and check out the museums. There are also good music venues just to the north, a short cab ride away. Be sure to go to the Up and Under for live blues after trying the linguini with white clam sauce at Cataldo's. Everything is close and safe in this area. Another must is Summerfest, with weeks of music and fun. The new Miller Stadium is beatiful and plush for the baseball fix we all need. This will make your room at The Astor a weclome haven for the weary. The staff will do whatever it takes to please.
