Broken glass in room never cleaned
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/9/10
We picked this hotel because our friends were staying there. The front desk staff were very nice but never helped us with the housekeeping mess of broken glass in our room left behind from the previous guests. We asked three times for our room to be cleaned and we were still stepping on glass until we checked out. The housekeeping staff made us feel very uncomfortable about asking for the extra clean job for our toddlers and nearly accused us for the broken glass. In the end, we were left feeling very unsafe and unsatisfied in the hotel. They are very lucky our young children never cut themselves on the broken glass left on the carpet, near the beds and in the bathroom.

Let the hotel guest beware.
By R E, 8/2/09
Picked this place because it was close to my home. Needed a place to beat the heat. This wasn't it. First, if you book through a hotel discount site, the room you will be getting is SMALL. I am not exaggerating. There was barely enough room for a single full bed which was pushed against the wall. This room was for 2 people. We upgraded to a room with two queen sized beds for an additional $20 per night. When I spoke to the woman at the front desk about how unacceptable the original room was, she made the snide comment, "That's what you get through Priceline" Maybe so, but nowhere on the entire Hotel Deca website are you given any warning that your room (to use the term loosely) would be furnished with only a full-sized mattress. The upgraded room was better but the air conditioning was WEAK. You can adjust the thermostat to as low as 60 degrees but it failed to cool the room down to an acceptable level. When the sun went down, we had to open the windows to get enough cool air in. The room was also not very clean. There were noticeable cobwebs dangling from the ceiling on several different spots in the room and the air vent or duct in the bathroom was filthy. It probably hadn't been cleaned in months. The walls of the hotel seem paper thin. At 12 midnight, it sounded like people who were waiting for the elevators were waiting in our room because the sound of their voices traveled right through the walls. The TV looked nice but the picture was terrible. The TV was a 32 inch LG LCD. However, all the channels were still analog. Many stations like TBS and USA had a wavy pattern running through the entire screen during the entire show. It was annoying and a waste of a perfectly good hi def TV. If you read anywhere that parking is free - Do Not Believe It. There is a daily charge to park in the lot. The closet in the upgraded room was a walk-in. However, there was only the tiniest 3 drawer dresser made of plastic to put all your clothes that couldn't be hung. This "dresser" was about the size of what most people would call a night stand. As for the lounge called The District. It was not very busy when we went in for a drink yet the service was slow. With three people working the bar, one would think that the service would be better. The bar menu was innovative but the food was too expensive for what you got. For example, the lamb and feta sliders cost $12. What we got were 3 small ground lamb and feta sandwiches. They were about the size of a 50 cent piece. These are not the size of the sliders you normally see at places like Red Robin or Ruby's. They are small and, while they were tasty, not worth $4.00 a sandwich. We also ordered the scallops with polenta. This costs $7.00. Rather than receiving scallops, we were given shrimp (maybe 5 shrimp total on the plate). We pointed out to the server that we had ordered scallops and not shrimp. It was only then that we were told that they didn't have scallops. The shrimp actually tasted just fine but the polenta was terrible. It had a raw corn flavor and a mealy texture because it was not properly cooked. We ordered the crab cakes as well. The cost was $9.00 for three crab cakes. While the crab cakes were OK (deep fried with a panko crust), the salad served as a garnish or accompaniment to the cakes was terrible. The dressing was harsh. The acid flavor overpowered everything. It wasn't as though a nice balsamic was used. Rather it tasted almost as if someone used a cheap red-wine vinegar and then forgot to add the extra virgin olive oil to mellow it out. I am not kidding when I say the dressing was awful. My final comment is regarding the elevators. They are slow. When we were trying to check out, we must have waited almost 10 minutes for the car to arrive. It then proceeded to stop at every single floor (15 -1) was packed to capacity. Just be forewarned - this hotel is not that great!!

Nice looking, but...
By Nathan M, 6/13/08
This hip, art-deco hotel is in a good location near the University of Washington. The rooms are comfortable and modern, however there is little closet space. There are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby. While certainly trendy, Hotel Deca fails to deliver some of its promises. The wireless internet is spotty and not secured, so don't expect to use it for important business or shopping. Also, the fitness center is small and poorly furnished. In addition, the employees all seem new. The lounge and restaurant in the basement is probably best used for a drink or coffee. The food is only average, no better than the much cheaper and just-as-good, if not better, local places within walking distance. It is also important to note that room service is only available from 5 to 10 pm, although the front desk said that they can order in take-out. From Seattle Tacoma it is about a $45 cab ride.

Excellent
By JKF, 2/17/08
I googled and found the Hotel Deca. It was an excellent location for my friend and her mom because it was so close to the University of WA. It's a central location in the U District, walking distance from a movie theater, resturants, and even a bit of a walk to Green Lake. The room itself was nice. Neat decor, ipod dock, flat screen TV, and a city view.

Good, not great, Hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/14/07
My friend and I chose this hotel to stay at because it was in a good location. We were in town for a concert. We had booked a room for 2 adults and were given a one bed room. The room was a crackerjack box...it was so small. When we asked at the front desk if we could upgrade...the clerk said "well, it's significantly more money" and that was that. We called down to the front desk when we saw just how tiny the room was and got a different clerk who was SUPER nice...and the upgrade to a two bed room was ONLY 20.00!!! Not a significant amount at all! We had booked through price line so we were grateful that the second clerk was so friendly. The new room was great. It had two comfy beds with lots of comfy pillows, a nice TV and DVD player, an I-pod dock, and a great view of downtown, the space needle and the Mt. range. It was great! There is a coffee shop and a nice lounge and a really nice lobby. The staff was so friendly (except for clerk number 1). I loved the artwork and the general feel of the hotel. We are defiantly going back to Hotel Deca!!!

Something different
By Julie, 9/25/07
I liked this hotel because the room was not your average boring hotel. The bed was comfy, the style was retro-modern, there was a great tv and dvd player, and an ipod docking station so we could listen to music while we got dressed for the day. We could see the space needle from the window, and it was fairly quiet during the night. Not too expensive for the city, but wasn't the cheapest thing either. But no hot tub or pool. Would certainly recommend it, and wouldn't mind staying there again!

Not quite what they say
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/19/07
Location was awful, would not want to leave this hotel after dark! Staff are OK but not very well trained and the management seems none exsistant. For the best service in the hotel go to the District Lounge where the food is well priced and the staff great. Would not stay here again

Poor Service for Professionals
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/19/07
The place felt like a cheap one star hotel masquerading as a nicer hotel with its superficially chic, but cheap-on-closer-inspection-art-deco furniture. I am a middle-aged professional that travels for business at least once a month. Hotel Deca looked like the appropriate place to stay, given its proximity to the University of Washington. I have probably stayed in over 100 hotels in the past 20 years. I have never met a staff so ignorant. My first question regarded gym facilities at the hotel. The staff person asked another: do we have a gym here? Each time I inquired about gym facilities, I received a different answer. I was constantly faced with inaccurate answers to my questions. I was incorrectly told that there were no laundry services. When I asked about restaurants nearby, I was told to: just walk down the street (it was night). When the wireless stopped working, I was told to: just purchase a cable from the front desk. I noted that perhaps some of the other guests would like to use the wireless service. The staff were well-meaning and friendly, but completely ill-prepared to perform their jobs, and unfamiliar with the norms for a hotel. On my second night I received no wash cloths, shampoo or conditioner. This problem was corrected by the night staff. The room was small, and there are no drawers for clothing, except for a small plastic one at the bottom of the closet. I emailed the manager of this hotel, but received no reply. Generally, unresponsive.

A good value
By Norman, 1/30/07
While this is an old hotel (circa 1910) it has ben remodeled and the rooms, while not huge are comfortable and clean. We liked the free continental breakfast (even with the plastic plates) and we liked the closeness to the U of Washington campus. There is a number 71 bus to downtown about 2 blocks away.Taxi to Pike St Market downtown is $12-$14.But it is a $40 cab ride from the airport.Front desk people were friendly and helpful. There are two computers in the lobby for checking e mail. They are free and we were pleased about thateven though one of the PC's was out of order. There is a small exercise room but the lone treadmill was out of order. My wife thought the bathrooms could have had more lights. Some folks have commented that the neighborhood seems a little daunting at night though it looks safe overall. We had a group rate of $119. per room and that was greatwe thought even without a pool, spa or fancy restaurant Try the Seastar restaurant in nearby Bellevue.Great seafood but it is a hefty priced cab ride. We also liked the art decc furnishings and atmosphere. Meeting room food was good!

Wonderfully Friendly
By Super Saver, 5/23/06
This is a terrific place to stay while in Seattle. The staff is unusually friendly, the breakfast excellent and the location great. To top it all off, my room had a view of Mt. Ranier!
