Horrible and Dirty
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/29/10
I have previously stayed at this hotel under different management before and the time there was fine. However, this last trip to visit my family for the Thanksgiving holidays was horrible and I will never stay there again. At checkin, they insisted my mother be there, since she booked and paid for the hotel. Then they didn't need her there at all. The first room that they attempted to give us was marked cleaned, but the beds weren't made, trash wasn't taken out, the counters were filthy, and refuse was over flowing the toilet. I went back and asked for a new room, which they gave me. And again, I got a filthy room. Beds again not made, trash again not taken out, cigarette ash all over the counters. AGAIN, I asked for a new room, politely. This time the staff, begrudgingly checked out several rooms for us and gave us a 3rd room. This one at least had been "cleaned" but the room was still very dirty looking. Tub was covered in soap scum, stained sheets and pillows, stained counters, ceiling that is yellow and water soaked. The first night's stay was fine after that. Sometimes "things" happen. Night 2, the hotel locked us our of our room. Upon finding out, we spoke to the front desk staff, who rudely informed my wife that "we didn't pay for more than 1 night. If we wanted to get our things, we would have to pay". We asked the clerk to pull a receipt, and he refused. Stated if I wanted proof, I had to provide the receipt. I asked to speak to a manager or supervisor, and was told no. As a supervisor is required to be on-staff, I told the rude front desk worker to find someone for me to speak with when I returned with the receipt. I took my 2 children, and left to return to my parents and came back with the receipt. My wife stayed to try and get a manager. Finally she got a supervisor, who almost 15 minutes later was able to find a receipt. The only acknowledgment we got was a "very annoyed and perturbed" (according to my wife) 'they paid for 3 nights". My wife complained about our treatment during our stay and the manager, Mr. Roy Martinez Jr, informed my wife that we were not the kind of people he wanted staying there and we should go ahead and check out. Apparently complaining about filthy rooms, rude service, and incompetence with the paperwork is not acceptable in that establishment. The supervisor did say he would get around to comping us for the day that we couldn't use because he was kicking us out, very unhappily ... 4 or 5 days later, if he bothers to get around to it. That of course, has yet to happen. The manager then went and hid and refused to ever speak to me or to come back. When asking for a receipt of checkout and/or documentation of the problems and the "supposed" comp, the staff refused to provide anything or sign anything, and the manager refused to be bothered to come back down to be of any assistance. They also refused to refund on my mother's credit card, even with the receipt and reference number on the paper ... because it was not my card (which they didn't need the card at all with the reference number). Eventually after repeated frustrating discussions that we went "I need this...." with a response of "no, we won't do that". I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone, and will never stay there again. It's filthy, the staff is incompetent and rude, and the place is over run with a sullen bad attitude. You'd be better off staying in your own car than getting a room at this hotel

Great Room for Great price
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/28/10
We enjoyed our stay there. The staff was helpful. The room was great for the price. We had our wedding reception there and all of our family stayed there. The location is a little out of the way from most things but for the price the drive is well worth it!!!

rented the atrium for family event
By Jose, 6/23/09
It was over priced, and poor customer service. The event was shut down early because the staff was overwhelmed with two events going on at the same time. According to them, they have the right to shut the party down early, with no refund to you. So if you have a wedding or other events I would look else where.

Stay away from this place
By Brenda, 7/28/08
DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE LOBBY, it gave me a false sense of security that was quickly dashed by the actual rooms themselves. We were staying here for a family reunion and what a poorly run place it is. I believe it is being operated on a very small shoestring budget and on top of that they just do not understand how to operate a hotel. In fact this place should be closed down for running such a poor example of a hotel. I can not imagine that the Howard Johnson chain is all run like this, but I will not find out as I have no intentions of ever going near another one. No towels in our room, we actually had to go out and buy towels so that we could take a shower, no mattress pads, just the sheet over the bare mattress, pool was so full of algae that it was closed, no toilet paper or soap in the room but they did give it to us when we went to the front desk, unlike the towels that we were continually told were being washed and would be put in the rooms when they were done. Rooms were not cleaned well, just made the bed (with the same sheets) and emptied the trash. But another couple that were there at the same time did not even get maid service at all for the 3 days we were there. The breakfast bar was a joke, not much to offer and out of half of that. The milk was out the last morning we were there and the comment I got from the employee when I told her the milk was empty was " I don't guess there will be many people eating cereal today", this was at 6:30 a.m as they opened it up. The outside front door area that opened into the atrium was not cleaned the whole time we were there, so the trash can was overflowing and trash had built up around the building. The glass doors were filthy. A terrible terrible experience, if you are reading this and are thinking of staying here or have reservations there, my advice is to cancel. You would probably have a better experience at one of the old old motor court motels that are in the area than you will have at this one.

Family Reunion
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/25/08
Had a big family reunion there. Meeting rooms were fine. Nice and cool. Room was ok. Swimming pool area is terrible. Pool needed cleaning and was in an area that needed mowing. Should have left the pool indoors. My opinion is that this place will not be open in another year. Not a great location and much work still needed to be done.

Enjoyed our stay
By brad, 8/19/07
Just got back from a four day stay at the Howard Johnson hotel and were very pleased. My wife and I were surprised at the overall look and feel of the hotel. Beds were comfortable, clean rooms and staff was pleasant. The furniture and decor were very nice as compared to other HoJo's I had stayed in previously. The only problem was one night we had some noisy neighbors but that only lasted a few hours. The staff was friendly and provided nice suggestions about restaurants and other things around Abilene. I am surprised by the previous review on here as we had nothing but complimentary things to say about this hotel. I would definitely recommend it, good value.

Our summer stay at Abilene's Howard Johnson
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/13/07
June 2, 2007 at 5:pm Howard Johnson in Abilene, Tx reopened their doors after supposedly remodeling the hotel. We were among the first persons to stay that first evening. When reserving a room i mentioned that my granddaughter could hardly wait to go swimming but the clerk never told me they did not have an opened pool. We were there for a wedding so went straight to the room to clean up and change. While changing, I heard someone trying to get in the door, then the door opened and a man walked right in with us half dressed standing there. he shut the door quickly and left. No apology given. The room was not completely cleaned in the dressing area nor the bathroom. there was a really foul smell coming from somewhere in the room and was told that it was the air conditioning system. Later, we found it to be coming from inside the drawers. I believe it to be from where roaches had once occupied the drawers. We left quickly to go to the wedding. On returning that evening, we went by the office to ask where the pool was and was then told there was not a pool at that time. I asked if there was a way I could receive a refund since we had not slept in the beds, and go to a motel where there was a pool as i had mentioned at registering that my granddaughter was excited about swimming and was not told at that time there was not a pool. The girl at the front desk apologized and said she would get the mgr. the mgr stated the best he could do was refund 10.00 only. After trying to convince him otherwise, we ended up staying since i could not afford another motel after already paying for that one. Disgusted, we went to the room, only to find that our key would not work. When we had entered the room earlier to change clothes, the door was open so we did not need to use the key. After returing to the front desk 4 times to get different keys and none working, the desk clerk brought the master key to the room and opened the door for us and later brought another key to try, which did finally work. during the night, the air conditioner did not cool the room and it became stuffy and hard to sleep. I reported all this to the front desk again in the morning to the clerk on duty when we checked out. She apologized and said she herself would report to the mgr and the head office because theywere not ready to open the night before and should not have opened at that time. I waited a few days to see if I would hear from the head office or the mgr. I heard from neither of them so I sent in a complaint through the internet myself to the head office. That was june 2, 2007. It is now august 13, 2007 and I have not heard back. I would rate our stay at the Abilene, Tx Howard Johnson most extremely dissatisfying!

Kiva Inn - Abilene
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/21/04
This is the worst hotel I've stayed in, yet. Approaching the hotel, one thinks "I see the trash dump, where is the hotel?". The grounds are covered in trash. There was no air conditioning in the room or in the covered pool area. The smell in the room was indescribable. The bathroom was filthy - blanket on the bed(in a non smoking room) had cigarette burns in it. Stay away from this dump!
