GREAT HOTEL!!
By angel_k68, 3/9/09
This hotel is awesome, my kids age 6 and 12 had a great time! The pool/ waterslide is great! They also have pool tables and board games! The staff was friendly, the rooms were nice and clean! I am a very particular person and i had no complaints at all! We often go to Rapid for the weekend and this is the best hotel there is! The Cheers lounge is very nice as well! We did not get charged extra to use pool/waterslide! Their rates are very reasonable! I would highly recommend this hotel!

DO NOT STAY HERE!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/23/09
My husband and I booked a room thinking it would be $80 and ended paying $275!! Let me explain. When we first checked in, the clerk told us that there was a mistake and that the charge would be $100. We debated and decided that that was not budgeted for our stay and we would like to go somewhere else. We were then told that to cancel our room, there would be an additional $25 fee. so it would be $125 for a room that we didn't use. Ok, so we stay. We sign only a bill statement. A week later, our credit card shows a charge for $275!!! My husband called the hotel and asked about this addition to the price and was told that it was a damage charge because the wallpaper was damaged. This is highly unlikely since all we did in the room was sleep. We were also told that we didn't sign a 'responsible for damages" contract. AND YET THEY HOLD US RESPONSIBLE! I did not even receive this contract. They are thieves. When we asked to speak to the General Manager, the clerk could only give us his name. Now, that was the major problem with the hotel. In addition, the staff was very rude to us during our stay. Our room was missing a couple of things when we checked in ( I wonder if they would charge us for those also if they knew?) The "special pillows" were very uncomfortable for us. They charge use of the pool for ANYONE not staying there - including our 2 year old twin nieces - $10 per person no matter the age. When asked why the charge was so high, we were told it was for the use of the water slide. The water slide is only open from 5pm to 10pm. Our nieces would be there at 9am and still they wanted to charge the same. All in all the stay was probably worth $60, and we were a little irritated to pay $100...but to pay $275 for one night at the Grand Gateway is not so grand. What do you have to do to wallpaper, really, to do $175 worth of damage to it!!!!!???? Certainly more then sleep.

Great Hotel and Helpful Staff
By Sheila K, 4/14/08
We stayed at the Grand Gateway this past weekend during the SD State Bowling Tournament. I can not say enough good things about the beautiful rooms and the wonderful customer service we received! We checked in late Saturday afternoon after driving in from 330 miles away. Upon getting to our room, we discovered that it was non-smoking, and as we are smokers, asked to have our room changed from a non-smoking to a smoking -- it was not a problem for the front-desk staff members to do! In fact, the room that they gave us had a fantastic view from the 4th floor, the room was spotlessly clean and the king-sized bed was extremely comfortable. We greatly appreciated the special rate for bowlers in the State Tournament, the shuttle service to and from the bowling alley on both days we were in Rapid City, the 2 for 1 special at Cheers, and the fact that Perkins was connected to the hotel and that we didn't have to go outside. It was so nice not to have to drive in Rapid City as we hadn't been there in over 30 years and with all the changes, we would have been lost! The staff was extremely pleasant and helpful. Thank you again for the great hospitality!

Great hospitality
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/3/07
We won a trip to Mount Rushmore and I selected the Grand Gateway for the amenities. The hotel offered a free continental breakfast, and had a computer available for general use. The hotel was older but recently remodeled. The hotel staff was very helpful - more so than any other hotel I have stayed at. The continental breakfast was very basic - bagels, toast, cereal, oatmeal, juice, milk, coffee and tea. Breakfast was severed poolside (indoor pool). My kids loved the large slide on the pool and I loved the hot tub. My only concern was there was no lifeguard and kids were going down the slide 2 - 3 at a time. The pool itself was very nice, Plenty of towels were available and it was clean. There is a Perkins restaurant conveniently located adjacent to the hotel. there is also a bar, Cheers, that has live music, slot machines and a lively crowd.

My Stay at the Grand Gateway was great, the Cheers lounge was a real good time, with friendly bartenders and waitresses. I felt liked and appreciated. Afterwards I walked into my room, and was greeted by comfy bed and pillows! Very nice and luxurious! I recommend it to my friends and family

Horrible service and lack of accommodation
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/8/07
We requested early check in, and arrived at 11am after a six hour drive from Colorado. We were deflated when they told us our room wouldn't be ready until normal check-in at 2pm, and we would simply have to wait until then. The problem was we were travelling with our cat, and were forced to wait in their parking lot for 3 hours with the car turned on because it was 95 degrees outside. Only when we came in at 2pm to get our room, they told us housekeeping hadn't cleaned it yet. What were they doing for the past three hours?! It wouldn't be ready until 2:30 now. Now we sat in the lobby to wait (let them pay for the air conditioning). One confusing thing was our room was on the first floor, and an assistant manager said they cleaned from the bottom up and the top down with two cleaning crews...why wasn't our room ready? We didn't get checked in until after 3. Multiple requests to speak to the manager resulted in "He's not here, we don't know where he is, and we don't know when he'll be back." This was on a Friday afternoon during normal business hours...where was the manager? They would do nothing to accommodate us, and we will never stay there again. We recommend you don't as well. We decided not to pursue this with management so we wouldn't have to relive this horrible day and ruin the rest of our trip, but felt they should have given us a free night or something. But nope, they were glad to take our money and provide horrible service. While waiting, we also heard a woman complain to staff that someone from the hotel came into her room and removed everything while they were gone because another party had requested a block of adjoining rooms. If it was me, I would have had uniformed police officers in the lobby in minutes.

I would never try this again!!!
By NancyS, 1/18/06
A month before Christmas I made reservations for my family to spend an evening there. When I made the reservations I made sure the pool would be available for the kids. When we got there at 2:30 n the afternoon we found the pool was closed for remodeling and they did not have one of our reserved rooms. When I wrote the corporate office they did not even respond. Guess they didnt care. We went across the street to the Ramkota and were treated like royalty. 2 bars, Great food, great casinos and most of all 4 water slides. They appreciated our business!!!!

GREAT STAY!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/2/05
We stayed at the Ramada because Country Inn and Holiday Inn were full. We typically would not stay at Ramada but the Holiday Inn Refered us, this was a very nice hotel. Rooms were spaciouse and the staff was exceptionally pleasent. Our kids loved the slide and pool. They had entertainment in the lounge both nights we stayed. we will come back next to the Ramada the next time we are in the area.
