A A Decent Option for the Disabled Traveler
As a traveler with a physical disability who usually travels alone, the Hilton Pittsburgh is a definite mix of hit-and-miss experiences.
Despite having booked online, it was impossible to confirm online that I had, in fact, received an accessible room. This lack of certainty can be alleviated by actually calling the hotel, but they are one of several chains who use the disclaimer "as available."
However, upon my arrival the friendly desk clerk knew of my request and accommodated it without question. The room was on the 15th floor and generally situated well for a person in a wheelchair with a roll-in shower and a bench within the shower. I will say that the bed is a bit high and a chair was blocking the path to the room upon my arrival. Furniture should not need to be moved in an "accessible" room.
The hotel is located right next to Point State Park and, from reading other reviews, I'd have to guess this is post-renovation. That said, those who desire a quiet room should probably make sure that no activities are occurring in the park or on the river. I arrived over the 4th of July and on the 3rd and 4th, the room literally shook.
The hotel offers free wireless, however, my connection was pretty weak all weekend. Of course, that was generally true for Pittsburgh as even area wifi hotspots seemed to have weak or no connection.
The room is higher priced, but would likely be considered a modestly priced business class hotel. The television looks like about a 42" LG flat planel with you basic cable options.
All phone calls accrue a charge including local. That seems a bit excessive given the already high room rate.
The area for loading/unloading is small and was chaotic pretty much every time I saw it. Fortunately, I'd caught a ride and did not have to deal with it. Parking is at a nearby garage...I believe the rate is $12 or so a day. So, plan for extra.
There are quite a few restaurants within walking distance including the cultural district. The convention center is about 6 blocks away. Sidewalks virtually all feature curb cuts so a disabled person should be able to function. However, it should be noted that not all curb cuts are ADA compliant and some definitely have some crumbling going on.
Staff was helpful, however, I tend to keep to myself so this was not a huge issue.
The hotel advertises their business center, however, it should be noted that all services in the center are for a fee including internet at $.49 a minute.
I will note, as well, being slightly irritated that my 15th floor room had frosted over windows with NO view whatsoever. How irritating. It made the room feel very depressing given its darker decor.
Overall, the Hilton Pittsburgh is on the lower end of my Hilton scale...a decent experience for the disabled traveler but given the abundance of other options in the vicinity I would undoubtedly explore different accommodations on my next trip.
