Occidental Grand Cartagena, Dayton

We were there for 9 days and I will never go back or recommend this place to anyone!!!! The rooms were ok...beds were not comfortable at all.Most of their staff lives there...From what I seen they will hire anyone who walks in off the street.On the 6th day we were there we finally got some clean sheets...never any clean towels(lucky we had our own towels with us).The pool was hardly ever clean to use..and when it was people just walk in off the streets to use it...Not a secure safe place at all.Had only one working ice machine in the intire place and the smell of pot being smoked when walking thru the hallways was unreal..They double charge you and say you stole their sheets and towels....and then when you try to question them about it, they just blow you off like you are a nobody.....Is definately no worth the money!!!!!!!!! Will be filing a complaint with the BBB.

This hotel is a great hotel to stay at. We would go back for sure. The service was great. The employees were very nice and helpful. The rooms were nice and clean too.Great price! I would recommend you stay at this hotel if ever in the area. It's worth it.

I would actually rate this lower than one star but that is the lowest we can go. The hotel is disgusting. The rooms are in very poor disrepair, the employees are not helpful, the beds are disgusting and uncomfortable, the grounds are dirty and full of litter and debris, the location is terrible and feels unsafe (i.e. "lot lizards" and the like), the "breakfast" was awful and there were bugs all over it, etc. We had actually booked two nights at this hotel but did not stay the second because the first was so bad. We will NEVER stay at this or another Howard Johnson again. I'd rather sleep in my car in the parking lot of a nicer hotel than return. It would be more comfortable, safer, and cleaner. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!!!

I thought this was an awesome hotel. The Lobby is small but the Business Center is great if you don't have a laptop. The hotel was very clean and nice, the room was just excellent. I am coming back to Dayton again just to stay at Howard Johnson.

Very nice, good location, several resturants within walking distance. Newly renovated rooms looked great, the manager informed me that they have put new carpet in most of the rooms and are finishing the others. The bathrooms are very clean, and the breakfast room is very nice and roomy. The only issue I had was that the exteroir could use some landscaping. Overall I think this was a great hotel and would happily stay there again.

The hotel was dirty, the room was hot and the shuttle service - if that is what you want to call it is horrible. We were supposed to leave for the airport at 6:00 and the person working the front desk didn't know anything about it. The manager is the person who checked us in, told us the shuttle would leave at 6:00 - the only reason we left at 6:20 is because we threw a fit with the person working the front desk. Then upon returning from our vacation we called and told the hotel we were at the airport and needed to be picked up. After waiting for an hour and a half we finally decided to get a cab back to the hotel to get our car. The manager was just then gettin in the van to come to the airport to pick us up but couldn't figure out why we were so upset. I would not even consider going back even if it were free!

I can't believe anyone would recommend this place! I think the one 5-star review got the wrong hotel! Bad location (it was deserted), everything left probably due to highway changes. The room was dirty and stank, and yes it was non-smoking. Had to go and buy air fresheners. Probably because of the cleaning staff that I caught a whiff of on the way out the next day. The sheets were so thin and worn out, you could see through them! A mattress pad was all that kept you from reading the mattress labels. It had a small cheesy bar and they hung a few towels in a poor attempt to hide the liqour so they could use it to serve the continental breakfast. Will not stay here again. Only saving grace was the shower, it was the hottest and strongest shower I have ever had at ANY hotel. Actually felt good, but not enough to justify staying here again. Staff was OK, but same guy checked me in that checked me out, must live there.

We walked into the hotel everything seemed fine, then walking to the room the floor is to be non-smoking. Well, several room's were smoking. Then we walk in the room to find dirty socks and spider's galore. Was to stay four day's stayed one night. Will never stay there again.

We had courteous, excellent service with a smile. The rooms were clean and well supplied. We liked the coffee -- the coffeepot was a real treat --, iron & ironing board, blow dryer, and clean bathroom. The parking was good. The beds were comfortable & the towels were soft. That was a luxury. The staff was very courteous & helpful. There was nothing negative about the it, but an in-house restaurant would be great. My wife owns a professional cleaning service of 19 years & is very detail-oriented. She appreciated the cleanliness very much. The motel was an excellent location off of the highway. We came to Dayton to see the "Diana, A Celebration" exhibit at the Dayton Art Institute and thought it was the most excellent we've ever seen. The city of Dayton is an excellent, enchanting place that we would love to come back and visit -- and DEFINITELY stay at the Howard Johnson Express Motel again. Thank you so-o much and please let your employees know that their excellent quality of work was greatly appreciated (Praising employees and encouraging them is a good motivator for top-quality work and will pretty much guarantee them good tips!).

This is the third but final time I will stay at this hotel. It keeps getting worse. The desk person was dressed in a sweatshirt and jeans and had some seeded looking friends behind the counter. The lock was broken off the back wing entrance door providing no security and the carpeting was dirty and the floors had old dirt under the beds and night stand that has not seen a vacuum cleaner for a long time. The heater squeeled and the toilet was dirty. The towels were really worn out and scratchy.
