Over priced and dirty.
By Robert, 08/13/09
Carpet was filthy. Gobs of hair on bathroom floor. Swimming pool was full of locals not people staying at motel. Walkway outside of room was full of trash and had a sticky substance that we had to wash off to enter room. Mattresses wee horrible. At breakfast there was a small refirgerator with milk tha desperately needed cleaning. Would not reccommend this motel to others.

Disappointed, but probably the best in Carlsbad
By Bradley, 04/20/09
Our room was large and the bed was comfortable. However, the plumbing was bad, the room smelled, the pool was cold, and the staff was indifferent. We are leaving two days early and will not return. It may not be Best Western's fault as this entire town is rude, unfriendly, and obnoxious. The caverns are cool but that is it.

Nasty, rude place!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/26/09
Pubic hair in the bed, stained sheets, unhelpful and unapologetic staff. Furthermore, Best Western was not responsive to the complaint. After years of being a loyal Best Western customer, I'm done. Based on discussion I've had with others and comments I've found posted, the Stevens is developing a reputation for their unsanitary conditions. Do yourself a favor and find a CLEAN hotel. This place was once nice, now it's just Nasty.

Stinky Service
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/09/08
I am amazed at how horrible the service was at this hotel. Not a friendly helpful face at the front desk or restaurant. Except for the cook. I needed help and was completely ignored, I mean deliberatly ignored, not once but three times. My mother finally asked a cook for assistance and he obliged. My friend had a small reception for her nuptuials there. The hallway was cluttered with junk, and the food and set up was almost an hour late. I heard the mayor of Carlsbad owns this hotel, how utterly disapointing. The rate was ridiculous. My friend's guests were made to stay at other hotels because of lack of availability, and low and behold I walk up and get a room. My room was nicer than hers, and she was the bride for goodness sake. There are better hotels in Carlsbad for sure.

We enjoyed out stay very much. The room was very roomy and clean. The pool was very clean and blue. The breakfast buffet was just awesome and delicious. It was great over all.

Stay Away, Stay FAR Away!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 03/17/07
I travel all over the country for work (engineering) and have stayed in every hotel/motel you can imagine over a period of 25 years. This was by far the worst name brand hotel I have encountered - I can't believe Best Western would franchise this location. My room was filthy and smelly (a kitchenette room, which obviously had been lived in by Carlsbad cavemen). The TV remote didn't have batteries, several light bulbs were out, and the furniture was broken down and dirty. The table and other surfaces were sticky. And did I mention that the room was filthy and smelly? The wireless had no bandwidth, so it was essentially worse than dial-up. The free breakfast buffet was bland and limited, and the OJ was an odd transparent yellow color (watered down perhaps? Tang would have been better). The front desk and waitresses all had a zombie-like "I don't care" attitude. Try the Days Inn down the street - at least it is clean.

We will never return! Consumer beware!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/01/06
This hotel has the worst attitude of any I have ever stayed at! Their attitude is that you will never return so while you are staying with them, they will milk you for all you are worth! We had reservations for the newer side of the hotel, and had paid for our room in advance!. Upon arrival they told us that the people in the room from the night before had decided to stay, so we were then moved to the "older" part of the establishment. -no adjustment made. We ate dinner at their Silver Spur Lounge. We asked for a side of shrimp with our entree. They charged us $17.99 for a side of shrimp!!!!! Waitress never said the side of shrimp would be priced as a meal. When brought to the manager's attention and asked for a more reasonable price as we had received 4 shrimp for $17.99. Manager of Silver Spur Lounge refused to budge. Turned back sheets and noticed a stain. Employee brought clean sheets to room -we put them on and no apology mentioned. When checked out only $10 adjustment offered. -not enough for unwashed sheets! Bed was old and did not sleep well. CONSUMER BEWARE!

Alwasys stay at the Steven's when we go to Carlsbad...
By jewell, 11/05/05
It feels like home. You can get a great meal, dinner and/or breakfast, right there in the hotel's restaurant. Evenings you can relax and or dance to live music in their lounge (don't have to drive, just walk back to your room.) The pool is nice for hot summer days and the location is good. We'll definetly stay again. Great value for the money.

A very bad, bad experience
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/10/05
I reserved a NON SMOKING ROOM. What I got when I arrived was a room they pulled the ashtrays from the room to make it non smoking. The stench from stale smoke was overwhelming. Due to prior arangements I am stuck here. Friday night, one of the wildest parties I have ever witnessed went on in the parking lot from 9:30 PM untill 3 something AM the next day. There was screaming, yelling, drinking, bottles thrown every where. Trash tossed to and fro. People running up and down the parking lot, stairs, in and out of doors the whole time. Nobody cared, calls to the desk was unanswered. People trying to sleep, started to just pack up and go. I could not, due to prior arangements I am stuck here. Leaving a deoderizer, absober, filter and cleaner going in the room all day, made saturday night much better. You do not get what you pay for, and you get more than you bargin for if you stop here. If you are a party hound, this may be the place for you. If your looking for a non smoking room, and some place to rest, then this is not the place to stop at. I finished up my project and left a day early. I was not impressed, I will seek other places to stop at, including the KOA and sleep outside before I will stop there ever.
