A great place
The Lake McDonald Lodge truly harkens back to an earlier era when life was simpler. The Lodge was built nearly 100 years ago as a hunting lodge. There were no roads at that time--the only access to the Lodge was by boat.
The great room (lobby) is incredible. A huge fireplace is roaring every night and morning. Samples of prior game hunts are hanging from the wall. The restaurant offers good food. The bar hosts a friendly group of strangers. Tourists stop in to check out this wonderful property as they are driving the Going-to-the-Sun Highway that crosses Glacier.
Don't expect luxury at the hotel. There are no televisions in the rooms, no air conditioning (never needed), and the bathrooms are very, very cramped and outdated. However, the rooms are clean and cozy, and if you get a room facing Lake McDonald, the view is fantastic.
There are cabins available for rent, but save your money and spurge for a room in the lodge. It is not to be missed if you are in the Glacier Park area.
