Description

The tallest building in Detroit, this multi-towered, glass skyscraper is visible for many miles. Erected in 1976 and designed by architect John Portman, the RenCen, as it is widely known, was a controversial attempt at downtown revival. Much criticized at first for its isolated, fortress-like layout and its labyrinthine interior, it is now more user-friendly now that it serves as the General Motors Corporation's world headquarters. The guest rooms are perfect for the business traveler and views from many rooms and restaurants in this riverside tower, Detroit's tallest building, are spectacular. The area has nightlife within walking distance. The central tower houses the Marriott Renaissance Hotel and a revolving restaurant, The Summit, at the top. Visitors can ride elevators to the 72nd floor observation tower for a panoramic view of Detroit and Windsor. Dozens of shops and restaurants, offering a wide variety of goods, dot the lower levels.

spectacular views
By ,
While I was in Detroit only a very short 4 days on business, I was immensely impressed with this hotel. Due to an overbooking issue, I was upgraded to a deluxe suite and was overwhelmed by the view of the Detroit River through floor-to-ceiling windows. All my needs were met, room service was perfect. While I don't expect to be returning to Detroit, if I did I would aspire to return to these accommodations!

Not what we Expected
By ,
The Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center was not exactly what I pictured it would be. When we arrived (which was Saturday) every shop, restaurant and bar was closed, so we ended up eating at "Burger King" in the basement of this place. The architecture is so ugly because the walls and columns are all gray cement with holes. It was also confusing as heck to find your way around. The rooms were also not as spacious as we intended them to be. If you stay here I recommend you come on a weekday, when the hotel is not a ghost town.

A little on the expensive side.
By ,
I went back in March of last year. Loved the location although the layout was very confusing at first.Room was clean. I expected at least a microwave for the price. All of the other ameneties were okay. One thing though. We purchased several bottles of alcohol and discovered that the help had helped herself. We did not bother to say anything to the manager because they would have denied it and did not want the poor woman to lose her job. My husband talked to her and just politely said not to touch it anymore.

Getting a room facing the water is an awesome experience. It has a very gorgeous view in the evening. If you just needed to get away and just wanted to relax I would recommend this.
