The tallest building in Detroit, this multi-towered, glass skyscraper is visible for many miles. Erected in 1976 and designed by architect John Portman, the RenCen, as it is widely known, was a controversial attempt at downtown revival. Much criticized at first for its isolated, fortress-like layout and its labyrinthine interior, it is now more user-friendly now that it serves as the General Motors Corporation's world headquarters. The area has nightlife within walking distance. The central tower houses the Marriott Renaissance Hotel and a revolving restaurant, The Summit, at the top. Visitors can ride elevators to the 72nd floor observation tower for a panoramic view of Detroit and Windsor. Dozens of shops and restaurants, offering a wide variety of goods, dot the lower levels.
