The Salem Inn, Salem

My boyfriend and I visited the Salem Inn last May for a 5 day vacation. We stayed in the honeymoon suit (even though we were not honeymooners). The Inn was wonderful and the room was perfect with a kitchen, large bathroom with jacuzzi tub, and private entrance and exit with a porch. The bed was huge and very comfortable. It was in a perfect location hidden amidst the gorgeous apple blossom trees and was all in all very quiet. I only went for the breakfast once as having our own nicely sized kitchen with all the needed appliances kept us from having to wake up early to catch breakfast. The day we arrived we simply ran to the closest walgreens and stocked the cabinets and mini fridge with a few items for breakfast meals. The house keeping is very quiet and discreet. We had our "Privacy" sign on the door the first 2 days and were never disturbed. We kept it up at night but took it down right before we would leave for the day, and return back to find everything clean with fresh towels stocked in the bathroom and dishes done. It was perfect. The only negative was that because of the old fashioned air conditioning units, if it happens to rain, the sound of the rain hitting them can be pretty noisy. I would definitely stay here again (and plan to) on our next trip to Salem.

* Booked a family suite for 5 days, 6 nights. The only private bedroom is also where you enter the room or can access the only bathroom. We informed the front desk that we wanted a different room since two of the guests staying were a married couple that needed privacy, they informed us that all of the rooms are like this (lies, we have stayed before and know this is not true). *No bathtub, just a standing shower big enough for one very short, very small person. *The room depicted in the photo is often not the room you get or pay for. We paid for a Penthouse Suite that in the picture had vaulted ceilings, full kitchen with bar, skylight, separate bedroom, etc.. We got a two-room calamity that had low, slanted ceilings, a kitchen in the living room with a mini-fridge (because of the ceilings, I take it) and three tiny windows, two of which were blocked with window ACs. *There was one 'king sized' bed in the main bedroom, which turned out to be two full-sized beds shoved together. You could feel the ridge in the middle all night long, super uncomfortable. The other two twin trundle beds were barely twins at all and only one came with a quilt, the other just had a camping blanket. *Noisy neighbors that smoked all night long. The ladies that cleaned the room also smoked right outside the front steps of the hotel, making one guest with severe asthma very uncomfortable. *Continental breakfast had no hot items (tiny slices of cold quiche, three cereals to choose from, instant oatmeal, honeydew slices, assorted stale baked goods like cornbread), but it did have a microwave to apparently reheat the 'quiche' (if one could call it that). We only ate breakfast there once, it was so awful we decided to buy breakfast elsewhere the rest of the stay. *Anything we complained about we were told couldn't be fixed or that was 'just the way it was'. We have stayed at the Salem Inn a few times before and it was fine (not great, but we were only staying a night at a time, so we didn't much care). This last time has insured we will never stay there again. Our money will be better spent elsewhere. Take our advice: Don't Book!

Loved the room...BIG room, great price, loved the food and just very spooky! perfect for Salem!

I originally planned to stay at the Inn for only one night. However car trouble kept me and two teens stranded for three days in Salem. The Ladies at the front desk were amazingly helpful and desperately scrambled to find us nightly accomodation on the spur of the moment. They even tried to find me more budget friendly hotels( had a strict budget and although the rooms were worth every penny...really stretched my budget thin.) Also acted as go betweens with my Canadian mechanic. On the second and third night we stayed at the Curwin house. Not as nice as the main inn, however the large bathroom and clawfoot tub had my two teenage daughters squeeling with delight.The staff put up with the teens numerous questions about hauntings and even told them they could explore the buildings as long as they did not enter any private and vacant rooms. Breakfast is included and was at the main inn...awesome not just the usual continental fare but also Quiche,tarts , cinnamon buns cakes and fruits. Our first trip to Salem and although not as long as I would have liked( budget dictated shorter stay after car repairs) I would love to come back and stay longer at this Inn. Room was reasonable... They gave us 2 Twin Beds instead of the King we asked for... Fireplace was small... Bathroom and Shower were horrible... Birds in sitting room were heard throughout the night... Parking Area was a few blocks down the street... Staff wasn't helpful... Only upside was the nice breakfast... I suggest trying a different Bed & Breakfast when in Salem...

The only thing I liked was the location. Dislikes: Loud music/orgy in next room until 3 am Old bedding in Peabody House Froze all night cause no wood for fire/heat didn't work Told girl at front desk of trouble, all she said was "Oh." Breakfast was cold and continental Wrote letter explaining trouble...no letter back

We stayed at the Captain house in Room 17. It was so beautiful. The bed was comfortable and the room was perfect. by accident we discover a twisted steel stairway from the bathroom. At the bottom of the stairs it led to the picturesque garden with the quaint statue and table & chairs. The room was pretty and at night we sat on the couch with the wind coming though the open windows. The double jucuzzi was an added benefit after the long days walking on cobblestone roads. Salem is an excellent vaction spot that has great food, many sites, and a beautiful waterfront. Top if off with staying at this great hotel and you will be sure to plan a return visit.

Just returned from a lovely 3night stay and would return in a heartbeat! We could walk through downtown Salem, to the Museum and shops - Even the rain didn't dampen our visit. Halloween must be fabulous! I understand there is a haunted room, if you're brave enough! Very nice breakfast, beautiful courtyard and great Inn Keepers!

This place looks great as do most of the B&B in Salem but I"m a little frustrated with all the restrictions placed on many of these hotels. You must stay two nights on the weekend.....4 nights for Halloween and they charge you over the top hotels costs. I'll be staying in towns close to Salem which are a little more flexible. Hey Salem, you need an economic boost? Try making things easier on visitors!

I forgot to write in the guest book, and so just want to say "thanks" for the wonderful stay at the Salem Inn. In Dec., my husband and I spent a night in the Honeymoon Suite for our fifth anniversary. The Inn is a wonderful bed and breakfast, and our room was amazing: the comfortable queen bed, the fireplace, and the whirlpool bath. We loved the champagne, chocolates, sherry, roses and continental breakfast. The friendly, courteous staff made us feel very much at home, a welcome change of pace from the hustle, bustle of Chicago. Salem, the little city with a big history, feels a bit like Halloweeen every day. We enjoyed every experience at the Salem Inn, and will definitely return again!
