Can't beat the Royal Grove
By catzndogz, 9/16/10
After going to the R.G. for the last 34 years, I feel like it's my home away from home! We have never seen bugs in our room, the bathroom is clean, clean towels delivered to your room daily, the stove, refrig. and microwave are in good working order, and the cabinet is well supplied with dishes, etc, and the bed is comfortable We can afford to stay at a high rise, but why not save a little money! The other guests become friends as you sit in the lobby and visit and catch up on all the latest about each one. The pool will cool you off, and the desk people are friendly and helpful. We have stayed at the big name hotels with all the fancy schmancy decor, but they don't compare to the R.G. in the long run! Royal Grove is perfect for us.

Best in Class!
By Joe, 9/14/10
What a FANTASTIC experience! The service was great - the desk personnel are always willing and ready to help find what you needed. And Christy was especially familiar with tons of places - a GREAT assett to the hotel. The location was perfect - a 2-minute walk from the beach and a few seconds from Kuhio Avenue (which leads just about anywhere). It was within a block or two of everything you could possibly need. The price was less than half of what some of the neighboring hotels charge, and they are generous with shared amenities. Need a beach mat or towels? Use ours. Need a book or game? Use ours. Need to do some laundry? Use the reasonably priced coin-op machines. The cleanliness rating is a little lower, not as much because it is dirty but because it is old. Small rooms - pretty basic decor - old appliances and TVs, etc. BUT... the beds are comfortable and clean! If you are looking for a fancy and extravagent resort experience, this is not your place. But if you want a reasonable price with a family feel (within a few steps of the fancy places), and can look beneath the surface, Royal Grove is EXACTLY what you want! THANK YOU ROYAL GROVE!!!

If your children are handicapped, don't go here!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 6/8/10
My son, 27, is mentally challenged. He wants to take care of himself in Hawaii. I have helpers for him to do laundry and such. They checked into the hotel, put his personal belongings away and went to do laundry as Hawaii is moist and some thing became mildew. The laundry room door sricks and makes a bank when opened and closed. My son thought it was funny and banged it several times. The manager himself came in to see what it was. Well, my son had not gotten his shaving equipment in yet and was a bit shaggy. 6'3' and 230 lbs of marsh mellow /boy. The manager said that they have no security and my son could not stay there for the week! So he kicked him out even before he could finish his laundry. How narrow minded, how intolerant, how inconsiderate as my son had NO WHERE TO GO! So don't go here if you or your children big or small are handicapped, they don't want your $$!

Convenient and great value
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/20/09
It's a basic hotel but clean and comfortable, staff is very pleasant, and the location, a block from Waikiki Beach, is great. It's a wonderful value for budget travelers. The window airconditioners are incredibly noisy however. Even in June we found we could sleep comfortably without the air. Our room faced Uluniu Street and the motorcycles were very loud. Westill recommend it!

Wonderful Budget Oasis Hotel in Waiki
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/16/08
Wonderful cheap pristine clean place. 30 seconds from the beach. It is worth your while to be nice to the staff so you can get a room there next year...ya, staff are quirky (sometimes in a bit of a daze)...but you are saving lots of money (rooms are $55 - 75 per night). We are going back. Think Miami Vice series (original series not movie) and the elderly sitting around the colourful motels- and you have this place! Free boogie boards and matts to use. Happy travels and mahalo Royal Grove!!!!!

Great Place For Clean Basics
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/11/08
Royal Grove may be one star in the "class" category but really it's in a class all by itself, explaining the near-five star reviews. The RG is a top-of-the-line 1960s hotel that has been maintained like a museum. A little rust on some of the fittings, a little peeling on the wood paneling, but everything is very very neat and very very clean. The pool area is like a 1960 beach-blanket party movie set, pristine and period-perfect. I felt like a kid going to Orlando for the first time over 40 years ago. Parking is $10 per day or $60 per week at another hotel a couple of blocks east. The beach is a block south and visible from the X01 room balconies, with our requested room of 601 having the highest and best view - ask for it. Skyscrapers of more modern hotels costing five times per night or more than the RG tower up on all sides. The neighborhood seems safe 24/7, with lots of mom-and-pop grocery stores and walk-up restaurants. We spent more for a modest Mex dinner for 2 just down the street than we did for our room this night - in Hawaii, how do you beat THAT? The RG is a little tricky to find in the maze of one way streets that is downtown Honolulu but if you're on a budget it is WELL worth the effort. I would absolutely stay here again anytime. Highest recommendation for those who have the word economy or budget on their list for a trip to Hawaii.

What a Dream Hotel
By AnnaA, 5/28/08
My best friend of 33 years and I went to celebrate our 50th birthday. At first glance we were a little leary but 5 minutes after unpacking we were so glad we decided to stay. An at home feeling about the place put us at ease. We didnt feel like we were half way around the world...we felt safe and secure and like we were on vacation from all worries...like we wanted.... The room is small but then how much time are you gonna spend in it considering Waikiki beach is just a block and a half away!!!! the pool is very nice...people are very friendly and warm. The laundry room is very clean and handy. Over all we were thrilled!!!

the best place on earth, eh!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 2/15/08
No complaints at all...were so happy to have a place that we felt comfortable and safe.. close to everything we wanted to do.....did not want to do too much walking and did not want to rent a car...wanted to see the action but also wanted to be safe...the beach was the best!, a quick walk only minutes away...the shopping and people watching was so fun...the web camera on the beach..have your friends at home check you out on the beach at a certain time.......our room over the pool was so perfect our little deck was great....the stairs were a killer, but will have help with our bags next time.....the kitchen in our room was handy, to make a lunch if we were out for the day...or to make our blender drinks to sip on around the pool at 2pm......the hotel is old but taken care of and loved... ..everything so close...the staff the best! always with a smile...the pool small but very comfortable and the guests are like one big happy family...will be back many many more times...happy trails to all....mahalo...
