11-TIME VETERAN LODGER
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 11/16/07
I won't repeat the information already given. Suffice it to say that this is THE hotel of choice for anyone (except the rich and/or famous) taking a cruise or coming for the Miami Book Fair, as I've been doing for 20 years. I drive down from Ft. Lauderdale, park by 8:30 a.m. Saturday, and don't move my car till 8:30 p.m. Sunday. If you're booking it yourself, you need to book for the November MBFI by March at the latest. Request a room on the 5th, 6th or 7th floor (too low and you get street noise, too high and it's airplanes) on the Bay side (east). I echo the recommendation to join the Priority Club, but note that the $5 off breakfast (a wonderful bargain) is off the total check, not per person. Also note that the restaurant bill includes a very European-like 15% gratuity (which you can dispute or reduce, if you like, since it is a buffet). This is because the hotel has a high percentage of foreign clientele, who were not tipping the wait staff because they assumed that it was already included. Last week, coffee and the all-you-can-eat continental buffet (cereal, danish, croissants, fruits, yogurt, and other cold stuff) was $7.95, and the full breakfast (eggs, sausage, bacon, and other hot stuff, plus all the cold stuff) was $10.95. This year I paid $98 + tax (a hefty 13.5%) because I booked and paid in full last December. The room was smaller than some I've had in the past, with only one double bed, but adequate for my needs. Last, I'd like to say that this area is completely safe if you're sensible, as you should be anywhere you travel. And I'm a single, female, senior citizen traveler! No fears, mates, just enjoy.
