5 reviews for Thames Inn & Marina, Groton
exceptional manager!
We came down for Sailfest weekend to this small establishment on Thames Street. The young lady in charge of this melee is named Chris. She checked us in during what seemed like a circus of people going here and there with a smile and showed us our room and told us if we needed anything at all to let her know. During this day i watched this young lady handle the parking of numerous cars, greet people, cook food, and generally handle the crowd by herself. The rooms are very dated, need paint, carpets are stained but the rooms were clean despite their need of upgrading. The cookout was a rousing success and the fireworks spectacular as always. We have stayed here over numerous years at sailfest time and it can be quite something dealing with so many people and keeping them all happy. Christine does an exceptional job and with a smile. Oh loved the hat too by the way!

It's all how you look at life I guess!

Liked: Chris, she was very friendly and helpful. Disliked: Some of the clientele, some seedy characters, some nice folk too. Is definitely a place where you want to lock (the three) locks on your hotel room door. Aesthetically, the place has a lot to be desired: cleanliness (or lack thereof, rooms/building needs painting and lots of upkeep. Bed was comfortable but the sheets had holes in them. We were there for 4 nights and the sheets were never changed. Great shower & Kitchen though! But again, needs to be updated. Location is not too bad, next to the river was kind of nice. My recommendation? Not a place for kids or the elderly or the extremely picky! Bring an air purifier and your own sheets and pillows and don't spend a lot of time in the room, but get to know Chris, she's a gem!

Thames Inn

The first thing I did not like was we made reservations for 3 double rooms and got a confirmation # and the when we called to check on the day of arrival they did not have the rooms. Then when we got there we were charged a higher rate than quoted.(there is no $59 a night rate) They ended up giving us one double room and four singles. The one room was practically in the attic and wasn't that clean. The air conditioner didn't work that good and the room was hot. The t.v. in this room did not have a remote and the bath room wasn't that nice either. Another one of our rooms was up by the street and we couldn't find it at first because the doors weren't numbered and the bed had no head board.the rest of the room was ok.In another one of our room's the carpet was filthy and had stains. also there was no remote in this room either. In the double the toilet seat and remote were both broken. Only one of the rooms was worth the price to stay there. The housekeeper never showed up to make up the rooms. When we went to check out there was nobody in the office to collect the keys. Over all I would Not recommend staying here.

My Stay
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 06/30/06
I was traveling with my 10 month old daughter and we were on a tight buget. We went to go visit her father who is in the millitary. The motel was very close, 3 minutes away from the base. It was also a marina so we woke up to sun shine, rain and fog. There were cute little shops around the motel that were fun to look at once and it would take you about 30 minutes to do them all. There is a great home made pasta place right up the side walk but no where to just buy sodas. We were a drive away from a gas station or grocery store so it was a real bumber when we wanted to take a walk, There really wasen't many places that we could walk because it was so steap in the area. We were constantly woken up by the sound of a large boats horn...and you continued to hear them all day. Other than the occational large ship or submarine that would go by it really wasen't that great for the baby. Also the rooms were semi-tighty. My first room had a broken dead bult that was quickly fixed when they came in the next morning. During the winter and spring months they dont have anyone on duty to keep an eye on things. They are stickly open from 9-4ish. I complain about my room not having the items that the web site said they would have. I was quickly moved but when I told them that they were false advertising, it seemed like they just wanted me out of there hair. Each room is said to have a refridgerator, oven, stove top, microwave, and coffee maker. One of my rooms was missing the stove top and oven and the other was missing the oven. All of the rooms on the second floor are run down and really need remodeling plus are missing Ovens and stove tops...ect. The walls were half painted but never finished, the paintings didn't match any patterns or designs. It was like they just grabbed random paintings and hung them over bad spots in the walks. The carpiteing was old, smelly(moldy) and was coming up. There were carpeting tacs that were stabbing me in the foot constantly. My daughter was crawling on them!!! If you stay there for a week or more, they only clean your room once a week.....but the cleaners are great people! They also have a slight insect problem(small baby ants) EVERYWHERE!!! They had great customer service but they amount that i paid weekly.... I would like to spend a little more to be at a safer place for my child, I know I won't ever go again. Also the internet connection was terrible!!! It never worked!
