Cheap but scary and gross!
By asg, 9/13/11
We were forced to find a hotel after Irene hit here in CT. Finding a room was not easy, but the Clarion had openings and a low rate. We had two adjoining rooms (my family in one, my in-laws in the other) and stayed for a few days. Upon arrival, we could not get our key cards to work. A maid told us to lick them, then proceeded to take our card, lick her finger, and run it along the magnetic strip. Um...yuck! Over the course of our stay, we had to exchange key cards three times because they randomly stopped working. At one point the entire lock mechanism on our door stopped working. Other things we couldn't help but notice: dead ants all over the bathroom floor, globs of hair in the swimming pool, never any towels available by the pool or in the exercise room, our coffee pot and fridge didn't work (the fridge was fixed after we told the front desk), a male staff member peeing in the parking lot, parts of the room covered in a layer of dust, and walls/doors thin enough to hear every noise in the hall and surrounding rooms. All of the doors in the building seem to have been designed to automatically slam shut, which is incredibly annoying. The AC units are very loud and woke us up each time they kicked on. We desperately wanted to leave, but could not find another hotel with room for all of us. Luckily, we were able to return home a few days earlier than we expected. I would never, never stay at this hotel again. It was disgusting, loud, and staffed with people who seem to have no idea of basic hygiene. For the price, I expected a basic room without extra amenities or even extra space. I did not expect such a low level of cleanliness.

Cold water and absent staff!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/21/10
Was looking forward to a nice weekend near the shore but could not even relax with a hot shower! Water would fluctuate to warm and cold at first then progress to cool water only. We attempted to complain to the front desk but there was no one in sight. Instead there was a sign stating that staff were on a break (at Saturday 6pm)! That night we complained and were told to try again the next morning (our check out time) and were not given a new room. The next morning, the same thing happened and all that they could say was that it was because so many people were showering at once. I don't buy that and have never had that problem at any other hotels. As a side note, the beds here are too firm and the pillows are too thin and are only half the width of a normal sized pillow all which makes for an uncomfortable nights sleep!

Would Go Back In A Heart Beat
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/22/07
My fiancé and I booked our vacation through Price lines “pick your own price” option. When I saw that we had booked the Holiday Inn I began reading reviews and was absolutely horrified. Everything I read said that we had picked quite possibly the worst hotel in Ct. I almost wanted to cancel my trip to avoid spending four nights in a dump. When we got to the hotel, however, it was nothing like the reviews had said. The receptionists were prompt, friendly and even gave us a list of the local restaurants to assist us during our stay. Although our room was on the second floor the lack of an elevator was never an issue. (It would seem a little silly to have an elevator in a building with only two floors). The only noticeable smell in the building was of chlorine from the pool. Our room was not only smoke free, but immaculately clean and housekeeping was wonderful keeping our room stocked and clean all four days we were there. Although we didn’t eat at the hotels restaurant, (we had had bad experiences with the same restaurant at other hotels) the lounge staff was friendly and the Outback Steakhouse was wonderful (we had the friendliest waiter ever). Overall our only complaint was with the exercise room. It was the only room in the hotel that smelled musty and the equipment didn’t work right. But to be fair of everything that could have gone wrong not being able to work out on my vacation was probably a good thing. The location was perfect, right off I95 and only exits away from Mystic, Ocean beach and other popular tourist attractions. For the price I paid (under 80$ a night) I would go back in a heartbeat.

will not go back!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/18/07
We booked three rooms and what a dissapointment. All three rooms smelled awful (very musty. It took like 5 times for the toilet to flush properly. Although we only stayed there for one night that was enough for us. We will never go back there again.

This hotel isn't as nice as I thought it would be.
By Ashely, 7/23/07
Let me start off by telling you that this was not the first time i have stayed at Holiday Inn in New London, CT. I went here about 2 years ago on vacation with my family, and it was a very nice stay. That is why I decided to take my family there again on our vacation this year. However, this time, my family and I did not enjoy our stay because it wasn't as nice as we thought it would be. It seems like from the last time we stayed, the cleanliness of the hotel has gone down hill. First off, I booked a non-smoking room for my family. However, when we arrived and got to our room, it was surrounded by smoking rooms. We could smell the smoke in the hallway everytime we stepped out our door. Also, there was sort of a musty smell to the second floor of the hotel, where our room was located. Once I was in my room for a while, something to the room made my sinuses start to act up. Also, when my wife and I took our kids to go swimming in the pool, I went to go check out the work-out area in the fitness room. When I went inside, the room had a moldy smell to it, and sure enough there was mold in the air conditioner, which means it was being blown around the whole room. It was so bad, it made me feel sick. This is why I am never going back to this hotel again. I would not recomend it to anyone.

nothing special
By MARKP, 5/22/07
It was okay. The restaurant and lounge were not up to par. The room was okay. It was an average holiday inn in my mind.

Disappointed
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/23/06
I stayed here on a business trip and was disappointed with several features. If was i was giving a smoking room like i asked but was surprised that my room and the room next to mine were smoking and all the others in that hallway non smoking. I found the room to be a little dark and gloomy even with all the lights on. When using my cell phone to call anyone i had to move towards the window, with the curtains open, to get a goood enough signal to call, where outside i had full signal?? Every time i went back to my room after a long day of work my card would not open the door and had to go to the front office and have to reactivate my card. i have never had my card never work before and they acted like it happened all the time. The dining was over-rated, the menu only contained a few items that were nothing more than overpriced dinners nothing small. lucky they was an outback steak house across the parking lot to get a decent meal
