THE END OF AN ERA
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/11/08
We visited Sunrise again this past summer and sadly found out they are selling the property to the state of Ct. To all who never went, your sad loss. To all those who have gone, a sad loss for all of us.

It worked for us.
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/14/08
Whether or not you'll approve of Sunrise depends on your priorities. We wanted a place to hold a family reunion that family members could afford, most or all could attend if only for a brief time, and we would have private places to gather to exchange stories and historical photographs. We didn't want to have to worry about meals or to have to plan every moment and still have options for all in attendance to keep us happy. Sunrise supplied all of the above. Mr Johnson made sure we had the places to meet. Each place, a house, a baseball diamond for our ball game, and the pavilion were perfect for our family. We numbered 40 (+), so we ate in our own section of the main dining room for each meal. The food was okay, some dishes better than others. If what they originally served for portions wasn't sufficient, the staff willingly supplied more. The staff was very hospitable. We were always greeted cheerfully. They listened to our requests and did their best to meet our needs. By the end of the weekend many called us by name and would stop and check on how our stay was progressing. True, the rooms and grounds crave attention but our family overlooked this and focused on our purpose of meeting and talking. Some never swam or partook in any of the activities, while other family members did it all. The best part was being able to meet for short periods, go our separate ways, and gather again for hugs, laughs, and stories.

Awesome :)
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/9/08
I love Sunrise. I have only gone for two years now, but I enjoy every minute that I'm there. I understand people's views of the rooms being old or the resort not being completely up to date or the fact that there are no TV's in the room, but this place is still great. They have the greatest idea's of trying to bring families together with tons of activities. The food, in the snack bar as well as the dinning area are great. The pool is wonderful and the spas are great for the teens who want to hang out late at night. This resort is so relaxing and will help take your stress away. True it isn't a place for everybody, but I sure recommend it!

Last update 1970s!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/8/08
Wow was this place awful! and talk about run down. It was definitely not worth the money. For $345 a night for a family of 4 we expected great service and activities. It was definitely not worth the money. Our cabin was musty, the shower leaked into the closet and soaked our things, the beds were old and creaky. And the whole resort was run down. The children's playhouse was smelly and stocked with cassette tapes from the 80s (no player) very old toys, non-working markers and no paper. The kid pool was dirty, mini-gulf was worse--never cleaned and stinky. Activities were meagerly attended and they charged an extra fee for everything. $2 to make a bead necklace, $5 for a tee shirt. Shouldn't that be included in such a hefty fee. I definitely don't recommend this place

Great place, close
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 5/22/08
My family and I have been coming to Sunrise for almost twenty years. It is a place that encourages family interaction. No T.V., but plenty of activities, food and good times. Games range from Life size Monopoly, Bingo , Bocci, Volleyball, Basketball, cannonball and swimming contests, to teen night at the spa. The buildings are dated, this is not a super modern facility. Many of the building are old, but for our family that is part of the charm. The food is plentiful and good. They make accomadations for a vegan teenager. The prices are reasonable, with discounts for longer stays. We love the Fourth of July, even though it is never on the 4th. The people are friendly and helpful.

DONT GO/ STAY HOME
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 8/18/07
Stay home dear vacationers! This place is not a good place to go. The place was horrible and moldy. We booked the most expensive room for the night, overlooking the river. We came there and the river has only a foot of water, cannot use the canoe or little boat. We checked our room and it was moldy with wet stinky carpet. (the room named Bostonian and our friend's room named the Ritz). We came back to the office and asked for our money back..and drive back home.

love it!
By kristy benson, 2/16/07
sunrise is a great place for families to enjoy each others company- moms don't have to cook and that really takes a lot of stress away. the food isgreat, the pool is huge and the owners are helpful and friendly... the rooms aren't like the hilton but we were hardly in our room... it's nice that it's all inclusive so you don't have to leave if you don't want to. We left for a few quick trips and there are cool antique stores and a quaint little shopping center.

Annual Guests
By LaurenSurp, 2/14/07
My kids absolutely love Sunrise! The thing they love best is that they can do their own thing without having to have mom and dad beside them all day. They love being able to be independent (and actually relaxing at the pool is great for Mom & Dad). The staff is great and I trust their supervision. We choose to camp at Sunrise- which I would highly recommend. Hardly anyone camps, but if you like camping, it is about 1/2 the price of the room with no other difference - complete with FREE showers (no feeding quarters with shampoo on your head) We also go for day trips with friends. For $25 for 2 meals and all the amenities, it's cheaper than any amusement park! We'll be heading back there again this summer.

moldy, musty, and unsafe
By traveler, 8/15/06
Just returned from a long weekend here. We will never go back. A horrible awful place. Disgustingly moldy and musty rooms. Numerous guests corroborated this. Very very very old. The entire place is run down and in need of renovations. I'm surprised the CT inspectors even allow this place to stay in business. Unsafe playgrounds, cracked concrete around the pools, the whole place looks like it hasn't been renovated in 50 years. Food was acceptable, but way overpriced for what you get. Most of the staff, high school and college kids, were pretty friendly, but the staff entertainers, particularly the magician, was horribly rude. Perhaps a nice place for a day trip, but don't stay overnight! I would suspect that the extremely positive reviews would have to be ones posted by the owners or their friends. They sound eerily similar to the commentary on their web site. My advice: avoid at all costs.

Big range in reviews?
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 7/25/06
When I checked out the reviews on Sunrise I was surprised to see the reviews ranged from one to five stars. A friend of mine had told me Sunrise reminded her of the summer sleep away camps she had gone to as a child, except it was for the whole family. With that expectation in mind I was pleasently surprised with Sunrise. The scenery is lovely as you drive in. Accommadations vary from rustic cabins to Hotel rooms. The cabins reminded me of camp, except they do have private facilities, and a/c. No T.V., so you actually spend your time enjoying your kids and family. It is a very different vacation, and does take some getting used to. The activities kept my young children going from 9 a.m. dance lessons, to arts and crafts, to cannonball contest, to evening entertainment with magic shows, reptile man, and bingo. They loved every minutes. I loved the no cooking and cleaning. The food was good and the staff was great about making accommadations for a very picky child. I can not wait to go back, but I am not sure how much my children will enjoy this as pre teens.
