Worth it
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 01/17/10
This hotel gets a bad rap because it's 48 years old and still calls itself a Regency. But you'll notice the price is lower than competitors, not to mention the many Priceliners getting in for $50/night. It's worth it because it's spacious, lushly landscaped, peaceful and they try to make up for the flaws with outstanding youthful service and great food. The more you know about the area the more you appreciate the price and the location. Ask the Sandbar staff for local restaurant and activity recommendations. They are great people.

NOT EVEN CLOSE TO 4 STAR!!!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 08/25/09
The carpet in the room felt so dirty that I kept my shoes on the whole time. There was mold on the bathroom counter and the bathtub was rusted. The bathroom was so small I could barely get toilet paper without hitting the other wall. At 9 am, housekeeping was knocking on our door to clean our room...is there no system to figuring out who's checked out??? If this is a 4 star hotel, then it must be on a 10 point scale!

GREAT PLACE
By , 05/02/09
We booked this through Priceline and got the room for under 75, each room can sleep 6 easily and were very clean. Hotel staff goes out of there way to help you. Parking is pricey but you can also park in the park on the backside of hotel for free. Fashion Island is near and offers over 20 different restaurants, we ate at French 675, they have 3 different $10 dinners to include fillet minion, also enjoyed happy hour at Yard House. We walked the mile to Balboa Island and did the tourist thing, but also took the ferry from there to the beach.

Very unsafe
By Upset, 09/15/08
I went there and there were fights that broke out and no security anywhere. Finally security came and pretty much did nothing. The cops showed up and did nothing but arrest someone that was the victim. They didn't even try to find the guy that was doing the fighting. I also saw wepons on the premises... which they did nothing about. Very unsafe. I will never go there again.

Beautiful grounds, average rooms
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 04/16/08
When we first pulled up, we were wow'd by the location (very central in the Newport Beach area) and overall landscaping and decor. It appeared very reflective of the beachy yet opulent Newport lifestyle. The service was good, and we felt very welcomed by the staff. Check-in was quick, and the staff was very helpful. We were disappointed when we got to our room, however. It was a very average hotel room... perhaps more reflective of

Stay if You Are in Need of Exercise
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 12/18/07
When we arrived we had could not believe the parking situation it was down a very steep hill and it was awful hulling all of our luggage up and down the hill. And on top of that they charge $16.00 a day to park there our other option was to pay $25.00 a day plus tip for vallet parking. There was no lighting going to the parking lot so it was pitch dark returning from our car at night so a couple of nights when it was pouring down rain we did not have any dinner because of the parking situation and all of the restaurants in the hotel where closed. Rooms where ok did have maid service everyday without asking which was nice. And pool was peaceful and clean.

Not Worth the Money
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 09/12/07
I don't know who rates hotels or what the criteria are for the star classification for hotels, but the Hyatt Regency, Newport Beach, CA is not a 4 star hotel by anyones standard. The biggest problem with this hotel is the cleanliness of the rooms. Hyatt desparately needs to spend more of its money on housekeeping and ensuring that the rooms are clean instead of making sure that all the trees and grass are trimmed perfectly. When I first checked in I was given a room in the "newly renovated" Balboa building. The room had the worst smell. I asked for a new room and was given one in the Lido building. The room seemed OK at first, but my son kicked his shoe under the bed and when reaching under to get it pulled out an nasty old sock, an old baby bottle, and a dirt encrusted baby rattle. The tile in the entry and the rug were very dirty and had a lot of hair on them. I wasn't too pleased with the self parking either. You have to pay an extra $16 per day to treck to and from your room up and down the hill to your car. Not at all convenient and I would not consider this a 4 star hotel. I did not use any of the other ammenities, so I cannot comment.

too many smokers, but alright
By The Blairs, 07/07/07
Overall, this is a nice family hotel and we enjoyed ourselves very much.We usually travel in Marriott's and perhaps they have spoiled us. The location of this hotel is great for being in central Newport for Balboa Island, Corona Del Mar and the peninsula as well if you have a car.If you do not have a car, I would stay at a beachfront location. The pool on the web site is the non heated one, but it looks pretty.Only two pools are heated and they are not as beautiful, the Balboa building has the prettier pool but we would not pay extra to have a pool view as the noise was quite pronounced. The restaurant was high in quality but terribly slow in service. They were pushing the buffet but we don't like buffets so we ordered off the menu. The best thing I have to say about this hotel is that Ryan, the clean cut guy with short hair who greets you at the valet, is just spectacular. He just welcomed us and was so classy in every way.I felt like I was back home at the Marriott! He always recongnized me and made me feel at home.Once, our four year old dissapeared and Ryan got right on it with security. My husband felt that the parking fees were too much and I agree. My biggest beef with this hotel is that people smoke cigarettes in a supposedly non smoking hotel.During our breakfast, a woman was puffing away outside, which made me really lose my appetite. She was from the middle east and did not know that smoking is not considerate.

The Bad Begining
By layback, 08/05/05
This is a pleasent resort that could have betten pleasenter. Because of our AAA rate, we where given a smoking room (when we had requested non- smoking) in an older building. the room was smallish and very old, overlooking a noisy pool that was full of of loud teenagers that we could hear until ten thirty pm, athough the pools where supposed to close at ten. After complaing and waiting a intire day, we where upgraded to a much better room with a balcony in a newer bulding that was quiet. The pools are nice, athough the spas area little too hot and shallow. Bike rentals and golf would have been a nice touch but for the prices that where charged we could have brought our owon. The shuttle to take you to the Fashion Island Mall is not reliable, but betterthan bringing your owon car, and paying for parking. Another con was that to get to the Bay Building, (the smoking building) one had to walk thorough a dining area and down sevral flights of stairs, not very convenint. the ping pong and shuffle board where fun.
