Do not stay at the Vagabond!
We had no problem with our room at the Vagabond Inn - when we booked from Australia, there were very few rooms left in Anaheim so we took it. The room was recently renovated, functional, and pretty standard for a motel. The location was within walking distance of the front gates of Disneyland.
What surprised us was the treatment received when their plumbing system became problematic. Of note, every toilet in the three rooms we saw has a notice on it about overflowing, i.e. in case of overflow please contact the front office. We stayed in one room, and the toilet did not flush; the helpful man at the front desk organised a plumber, who said there was a problem with that side of the building's system, and we were moved next door.
Not unexpectedly, the problem recurred in the room next door. The toilet overflowed, spilling its contents. The duty manager came, plunged the toilet, and said it would now be fine. We asked him to deal with the feces and urine on the floor, and he threw a few towels on the floor and then prepared to leave. We asked him how he was going to clean it up properly, and he noted that since it was a Sunday afternoon, there was no cleaner, and then walked out - essentially, expecting us to stay in a room with feces and urine on the floor, with no prospect of being cleaned! We had to ask him directly a number of times to either clean it up or move us. Eventually, we were moved to a third room. Of note, the plumbing in the third room was fine.
What was really unfortunate however was how my wife was treated on the Sunday night. The duty manager noted, when she went to get some change for the laundry, that we had changed rooms twice, and that he now had two rooms he could not sell - implying it was essentially our fault. He asserted that the plumbing issue - ostensibly theirs - was our fault, and that we were responsible for creating the problem.
When we discussed our unhappiness when we checked out, the office manager at the time of checkout was not really willing to help other than to offer a 50% discount on our next stay there (!!!)
The bottom lines are:
1. We were blamed for the faults of the motel, and it was inferred that we had essentially made two rooms "unsellable".
2. At no time was any staff member willing to take or acknowledge responsibility for the issues that occurred during our stay.
3. We were effectively expected to remain overnight in an uncleaned room with feces and urine on the floor.
We had no illusions about the quality of the room, or getting what we paid for. What mattered was how we were treated. Given the excellent service we have had at the five or six other hotels and motels we have stayed in during this trip to California - better than almost any other region of the world we have visited - the Vagabond stood out for making us as travellers feel as unwelcome as we have ever felt anywhere. We even resolved at one point - given that we were taking our daughter to Disneyland for an extra special birthday present - that we would not let the staff of the Vagabond ruin our Californian holiday, or our daughter's birthday; that's how lousy they made us feel.
