Found my hotel in Union Square
By Jeffrey, 10/23/09
My daughter and I visited this month. The staff was very polite, the rooms impeccable and our stay was delightful. We will return on our next trip to San Francisco. We were 1/2 block from Union Square, taxi's outside the front door and cable car on Powell. Absolutely worth the time and money. Absolutely will recommend this gem of a find to all. J Trapnell

Great for Touring and Close to Everything
By Joey, 11/25/08
The Handlery is a great hotel! While it's true that the rooms are on the smaller side (we had a room with a double bed), how much time are you really going to spend in it? The hote is 1/2 block from the Hyde & Powell street car line that will take you right by Lombard street (the really crooked one) and further down to Ghirardelli Square. It's also 1/2 block from Union Square and all the shops and eateries there. Walk 10 minutes and you get to Westfield San Francisco Centre with more shops and great eats. That 10 minute walk will also get you to Market Street where you can take a bus to the Ferry Building and Pier 1 on the Fisherman's Wharf and all the stuff there. You can also get to Haight and Ashbury, the California Academy of Sciences and Post Card Row (from Full House) with an 8 minute walk to the bus line and head out. And Chinatown is just on the other side of the square. But most importantly, the staff are friendly and the rooms are clean.

Very nice and affordable hotel. It was right downtown which made it really easy to get around the city! The staff was nice and the room was very clean. Would stay there again!

Not a great deal
By Vix, 1/12/08
Although they bill it as having been re-furbed recently, it's extremely long-in-the-tooth. Rooms are small. TVs are OLD. There is no wireless internet access provided. (You can get it through Wayport for $10 per day). The bathrooms are VERY small. Furniture is old and was never very nice - even in it's day. Street-side rooms are LOUD. (By the way - why doesn't San Francisco implement a no-honking rule for autos. This is annoying. The attached restaurant serves a great breakfast, but, it's not inexpensive. Staff is friendly. Hotel is VASTLY OVERPRICED.

The only Hotel for us
By George, 10/23/06
My husband is a native San Franciscan and we come into the city often and the Handlery is a tradition. We have raised our two children as guests of the Handlery and now return with spouses and grandchildren. We had a family Christmas at the Handlery in 2005, our gift to the entire family and it was a Christmas everyone loved. The teens were not bored and there was enough to see and do for everyone. The hotel fed us an excellent Christmas dinner and it was a memorable time. It is our hotel in the city.

Would not stay at this hotel again
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 10/15/06
When we arrived we were expecting a decent room due to wedding anniversary request, as stated in brochure. The room offered, which was a standard room was awful, smelly and small and looked onto a brick wall. Complained only to be told they had not been advised of our anniversary. They were not interested and we had to pay to 30 usd each per night to upgrade to a room that should have been standard (was nothing special). And when they did find us a room, sent us up and it was still occupied. Had to find us another room. Not very good when you have made a ten hour flight to get there. Also told that we could not use pool because we were not club members and would have to pay to become member. Next time will stay at 5 star hotel.

A Great Hotel
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/26/06
We have stayed at this Hotel numerous times. The staff is not overly friendly, but the hotel itself is not only conveniently located, but the rooms are nicely furnished, clean and very comfortable. We have always been satisfied and feel at home in SF when we stay at the Handlery. The restaurant may be a bit pricey, but the food is good. A great hotel...

Family owned with bad employee attitudes
By watchful, 11/11/05
The rooms are okay. For the amount of money asked, the rooms are not up to par with other hotels around. The front desk employees attitudes are very unprofessional and downright rude. We are talking 3 different employees. When talking to GM Jon Handlery about the problem. He passed it off to lesser manager. The next day same bad attitude. Not what you should deal with from a small family run hotel. Find another hotel.

Wonderful time!
By A Yahoo! Contributor, 9/26/05
The food from room service was unusually excellent! It tasted like it was from a 5 star restaurant. The presentation, service and quality was just fantastic. This made our stay at the Handlery especially wonderful because we were traveling with a fussy toddler who didn't want to eat in a restaurant. So we all were able to enjoy several terrific meals in the comfort of our extremely comfortable room. The front desk staff was very friendly and accomodating. They got our visit off to a nice pleasant start.
