Time will tell the true tale
This place used to be one of the greatest little hidden secrets in NorCal. My family went there when I was a kid, and their was the neatest woman who was always there (can't remember her name). BUT, In college, my friends and I would long to escape the dorms and I'd call down, tell the woman my last name and she'd always hook me up with a decent room for $60-70/night last minute, even though rack rates were like $150.
It was always clean and very charming. They treated everyone like friends and made an effort to ensure that not only your in n stay was nice, but that you enjoyed your whole vacation.
Now, I feel like the place is too full of itself and the charm feels contrived. I think it was sold in the mid 90s, and rates skyrocketed. That little old lady is long gone, and if you call down good luck getting any price break, even in off season. The rooms are nice, clean with some nice touches etc., but far from luxury. The location is AWESOME.
So I guess the way I look at it is this: When I go to Carmel, I look at what the different inns are charging and shop around. If Coachmans is cheapest, I will go there. But I don't automatically assume I'm going to stay there anymore, and in recent years have found two or three other choices that I actually prefer.
